Offer description

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non‑clinical professions and job roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included.

The Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Biomedical Scientist to join our team in Clyde Sector Biochemistry, working across the Royal Alexandra, Inverclyde Royal and Vale of Leven Hospitals. The successful candidate would be based at the RAH, but would be expected to work at both IRH and VOL sites as required. The department has recently completed a refresh project across all sites within the Core Laboratory area, provides a small Specialist Metabolic Service with assays including Protein Electrophoresis and PiiiNP, and supports Point of Care services across all three hospital sites and some Mental Health settings.

The successful applicant will join a friendly team of Specialist Biomedical Scientists, Clinical Scientists and support staff and will be required to combine technical responsibility with a compliance role, maintaining standards and quality of performance, health and safety guidance and local and national policies and procedures. The successful applicant will work closely with the department’s Quality Manager to help implement, maintain and develop the Quality Management System in accordance with ISO15189:2022.

Registration with the HCPC is mandatory for this post along with either a Master of Science degree in Biomedical Science, a higher specialist portfolio or fellowship of the IBMS or equivalent qualification. It is desirable that you have formal evidence of specialist knowledge of a range of discipline‑specific procedures and evidence of continuing professional development, for example, a specialist portfolio of development, attendance at specialist courses, training on new instrumentation and learning through reflective practice. It is essential that you can evidence your continuing professional development and you should have effective written, organisational, verbal and effective keyboard/IT skills.

The department is fully committed to continued professional and personal development and will support the successful applicants in achieving their full potential through mentorship, direction, and access to relevant internal/external training.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern

This is a maternity cover post for a period of 12 months. Non‑shift working post at 0.58 WTE based on the current full‑time hours under Agenda for Change this equates to 20.88 hours per week. The department will support flexible working for the successful applicant – days and hours worked can be negotiated.
