Data Protection Manager - 12 month assignment - 31435

As a senior Data Protection specialist, you will handle complex personal data matters and manage data protection risks. You will lead the Data Protection team to provide expert advice and support across the organisation, influencing decision-making at senior levels and supporting the Environment Agency’s legal obligations and business objectives.
You will work independently within policy frameworks, applying your deep understanding of data protection legislation to assess risks and recommend appropriate actions for complex issues.
The responsibilities include:
* Acting as the organisation’s subject matter expert on data protection, managing complex casework, complaints, and supporting the Data Protection Officer.
* Providing strategic advice to teams on processing personal data.
* Managing sensitive requests, including data rights exercises and high-profile information requests.
* Reviewing policies, procedures, training, and guidance for compliance.
* Building relationships with internal and external stakeholders to support collaboration and risk management.
* Contributing to strategic planning and project delivery, including transformation initiatives.
* Supporting data protection capability development through coaching and knowledge sharing.

The team:
You will join the Data Protection team within Knowledge and Information Management, part of Data and Information. We are a friendly, distributed team working across the country to make an impact.
You will line manage a small team of Data Protection advisers and collaborate closely with the Data Protection Officer and Information Law team.
Experience and skills required:
* Recognised data protection qualification (e.g., BCS, IAPP, PDP).
* Technical expertise and significant experience in data protection roles.
* Ability to build relationships and influence stakeholders.
* Leadership experience in implementing solutions in high-risk contexts.
* Commitment to teamwork, learning, and improvement.
* Excellent communication and coaching skills.
* Flexibility and resilience to adapt to changing priorities.
* Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
* Attention to detail and strategic overview.
Desirable:
* Experience in large public sector organisations.
* Compliance monitoring and reporting.
* Line management experience.
