Job Description Head of Human Rights - General Counsel team Full Time Derby/Hybrid We are seeking an experienced and capable professional to head our Human Rights programme for our global business. This key role will be responsible for developing and implementing human rights strategies, ensuring compliance with global human rights standards, and advising senior leadership on the integration of human rights considerations into corporate policies and business practices. The Head of Human Rights will work closely with legal, compliance, sustainability, People and business teams to safeguard and promote the company’s commitment to human rights across its operations, supply chain, and relationships worldwide. What you will be doing: Human Rights Strategy Development and Oversight: Lead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of the company’s global human rights strategy and policies. Ensure alignment of the company's human rights initiatives with international frameworks, including the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises, and other relevant standards. Monitor global human rights trends and emerging risks to advise the company on necessary adjustments to strategy and practices. Legal Compliance and Risk Management: Oversee compliance with national and international human rights laws and regulations, ensuring the company’s policies meet or exceed legal requirements. Advise on legal implications of business decisions, including the development of policies related to labour practices, supply chain management, and corporate social responsibility. Identify and manage human rights risks, including potential violations or claims that may impact the company’s reputation, operations, or relationships. Stakeholder Engagement and Advocacy: Engage with internal stakeholders, including senior leadership, business units, and global teams, to promote a human rights culture and integrate human rights considerations into decision-making processes. Build and maintain relationships with key external stakeholders, including NGOs, industry groups, human rights organizations, government bodies, and investors, to support the company’s human rights agenda. Represent the company on human rights issues in public forums, conferences, and meetings with regulators and other stakeholders. Training, Education, and Awareness: Develop and lead training programs for employees and management on human rights issues, including best practices, legal obligations, and the company’s human rights policies. Foster a company-wide culture of respect for human rights through awareness campaigns, regular communication, and knowledge sharing. Monitoring and Reporting: Ensure the development and maintenance of metrics and reporting mechanisms to track human rights performance, including incidents, complaints, and remediation efforts. Regularly report on the company’s human rights efforts and compliance to senior leadership, the board of directors, and relevant external stakeholders. Lead human rights impact assessments for major business operations, investments, and new markets, ensuring proactive identification of potential human rights issues. Dispute Resolution and Remediation: Oversee the resolution of human rights grievances and complaints in accordance with the company’s grievance mechanisms, ensuring timely and effective resolution. Collaborate with internal and external legal counsel on handling human rights-related disputes and litigation, including investigations, remediation plans, and settlements. For this role you will need to demonstrate understanding of the appliable health and safety standards and we are looking for someone who is/has: Education: 2:1-degree, professional qualification in area of relevance A minimum of 5 years of experience of working in legal, compliance or governance areas, with experience of working in human rights, corporate governance, or sustainability. Some experience of leading programmes across a large organisation, advising global businesses on human rights issues, including experience in multinational settings. Strong understanding of international human rights law, corporate social responsibility, and ethical business practices. Excellent leadership, strategic thinking, and communication skills with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels of the organisation. Strong business acumen with expertise in compliance, risk management, and dispute resolution related to human rights. Ability to navigate complex legal and regulatory environments across multiple jurisdictions. Proven ability to design and implement human rights due diligence, impact assessments, and training programs. We are an equal opportunities employer.
