Job Introduction
The Growth team is a multidisciplinary team that aims to increase the reach and impact of our digital output in BBC News and World Service.
It is not enough simply to produce great digital content: the Growth team designs and implements strategies for our journalism to be more easily discovered, for example via search and social media, in order to reach the widest possible audience - in particular 'under-served' demographics such as women and under-35s who are otherwise less frequent consumers of BBC News.
We are looking for a creative and self-starting Senior Journalist to work with Planning and On-the-day teams to strengthen BBC News' digital proposition at weekends and increase its reach.
The successful candidate will have in-depth knowledge of all aspects of digital publishing, including audience acquisition, best practices via search and social, online analytics, data tools and dashboards, and about differing audience motivations when consuming news content.
They will also need excellent communication and presentation skills, and an ability to juggle different priorities and respond to the daily demands of the newsroom.
Main Responsibilities
* Researching, compiling and sending daily growth team emails on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays
* Working with teams planning and commissioning content for weekend publication by providing audience insight, story ideas and pre-publication optimisation advice
* Providing real-time insights and optimisation advice to editorial teams during weekend shifts
* Analysing performance of content published at weekends and feeding this back to relevant teams to inform the next stages of BBC News' weekend digital output development
Are you the right candidate?
* Analytical thinking, with a high level of numeracy, including Excel skills
* Proficiency in online analytics, tools and dashboards, such as Chartbeat, Google Analytics/Adobe Analytics, CrowdTangle and Google Trends and the ability to translate them into editorial action
* Editorial experience and understanding of content production, formats, user needs, newsroom workflows and daily deadlines
* Commitment to diversity and inclusion in the team's work, and its output
* Excellent communication and persuasion skills, including the ability to present to journalists at all levels of seniority
* Collaboration, able to work in a multi-disciplinary team of experts, and with colleagues across the BBC
