PROFESSIONAL DUTIES OF A TEACHER (NORTHERN IRELAND) 1987, Schedule 3, Regulation 5
1) Exercise of general professional duties
A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties as circumstances require, including:
* Employed as a teacher under the reasonable direction of the principal or the employing board;
2) Exercise of particular duties
Perform duties reasonably assigned by the principal or the board, including planning, teaching, assessment, student guidance, and participation in meetings.
3) Planning
* Planning and preparing courses and lessons;
* Teaching students according to their educational needs;
* Assessing and reporting on students' development and progress.
4) General responsibilities
* Promoting students' progress and well-being;
* Providing advice and guidance on educational and social matters;
* Communicating with parents and external bodies;
5) Assessment/Reporting
Providing assessments, reports, and references for students.
6) Staff Development
* Participating in staff development schemes;
* Reviewing and improving teaching methods;
* Engaging in professional training and development.
7) Discipline and Health & Safety
* Maintaining order and safety;
* Participating in school meetings related to curriculum and organization.
8) Public Examinations
Preparing students for exams, assessing, and supervising during exams.
9) Management and Administrative Activities
* Contributing to staff recruitment and development;
* Managing or coordinating other teachers;
* Participating in curriculum and organizational development.
10) Working Hours
* Available for 195 days/year, with specific hours and duties as specified;
* Maximum teaching hours: 25 per week in primary schools.
11) Cover Responsibilities
Supervising and teaching pupils in the absence of their regular teacher, subject to school size and policies.
