SHEQ Officer – Year Fixed Term Contract
Location: Rye, East Sussex
Salary: Up to £45,000
Are you an experienced SHEQ Officer looking for a structured, hands‑on role within a regulated process industry environment? This is a 1-year fixed term contract opportunity based on site in Rye, supporting operational teams across health, safety, environmental and quality (SHEQ) activities. You’ll play a key role in maintaining safe operations, robust management systems, and strong regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities
* Process Safety:
o Oversee hazard identification and risk assessment activities (e.g. HazID, HazOp, LOPA, SIL)
o Ensure risk reduction measures are implemented
o Support management of change processes and assess new activities for Health and Safety suitability
o Liaise with Health & Safety and Environmental regulators and authorities such as HSE to maintain legal compliance
o Maintain compliance with safety documentation and emergency response plans
o Support emergency exercises, incident command structures, and external communications
o Report on process safety KPIs, incidents, and near misses
* Health & Personal Safety:
o Deliver site inductions and manage SHEQ competency programmes
o Ensure effective contractor SHEQ controls
o Oversee risk assessments and safe systems of work
o Conduct accident investigations and ensure corrective actions are completed
o Monitor and report personal safety performance
* Health Monitoring:
o Oversee COSHH and chemical exposure monitoring programmes
o Manage occupational health surveillance activities
o Report on employee health performance and emerging issues
* Environmental:
o Maintain compliance with environmental permits and legislation
o Manage environmental monitoring and energy management programmesInvestigate environmental incidents and complaints
o Report environmental performance and significant events
* Quality:
o Oversee site quality control processes
o Support Duty of Care visits and supplier audits
o Investigate and resolve customer complaints
o Report quality performance and issues
* Management Systems:
o Maintain integrated management systems aligned to ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001
o Support internal and external audits
o Review and improve SHEQ procedures and documentation
o Assist with SHEQ training, competency, and continuous improvement initiatives
Essential Qualifications
* A Health & Safety or Environmental qualification (e.g. NEBOSH or IOSH) or equivalent competency
* Strong working knowledge of HSE legislation and management systems
* Confident communicator with a proactive, organised approach
* Good IT skills (MS Office)
