We are looking to recruit a Band 5 Staff Nurse to our SSU team.
About SSU
SSU is a 24-hour unit caring for patients requiring a short assessment period in hospital. It is a fast-paced, challenging environment, primarily caring for medical patients. Patients are received directly from AED, AMU, or SDEC with plans for early discharge.
Our nursing team works closely with and is supported by MDT colleagues to ensure patients receive the best care and are discharged promptly.
Candidate Profile
We seek a committed, motivated Band 5 nurse who is ready for challenges and willing to engage. Shift patterns align with trust policy. Experience in urgent care is advantageous but not essential.
Role Responsibilities
1. Deliver high-quality care in a fast-paced setting, managing patient care, facilitating early discharge, and arranging ongoing care needs.
2. Maintain excellent interpersonal and communication skills, working independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
3. Communicate complex information sensitively and confidentially, demonstrating empathy and persuasion.
4. Ensure clinical skills are maintained and safe custody of drugs is upheld, complying with statutory and trust requirements.
5. Respond to complaints/concerns in the absence of the Sister/Charge Nurse and escalate as needed.
6. Manage clinical incidents, near misses, and participate in risk assessments.
7. Support patient advocacy and adhere to organizational policies and guidelines.
8. Participate in resource management, including stock and equipment maintenance.
9. Handle patient valuables securely and verify agency timesheets.
10. Coordinate with the Roster Coordinator for staffing needs.
Teaching & Training
1. Deputise for the Sister/Charge Nurse as required.
2. Manage own and team members' time effectively to ensure quality service delivery.
3. Supervise and assess junior staff and students.
4. Support appraisal processes and personal development planning.
5. Participate in safe staffing and redeployment within scope of practice.
Research & Audit
1. Contribute to research and audit data collection.
2. Identify relevant audit topics and evaluate research for clinical application.
3. Maintain professional portfolios and reflect on practice for revalidation.
4. Promote wellbeing and foster a culture of learning and innovation.
5. Engage in continuous improvement through reflective practice.
