Academic Support Assistant Location: Chester le Street Working hours: 8:30am – 4pm, Monday to Friday Temporary, full time, long term Leader Education are seeking a committed and enthusiastic Academic Support Assistant to work with Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 students within a specialist Pupil Referral Unit (PRU). This role involves supporting young people who may be at risk of, or who have experienced, permanent exclusion from mainstream education, helping them to rebuild confidence in their academic abilities and re-engage with learning. The provision is dedicated to creating a supportive, structured and inclusive environment where students with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs can make positive progress. Working closely with teaching staff, you will help deliver tailored academic support, encourage participation in lessons, and provide consistent guidance that enables students to overcome barriers to learning while developing resilience, independence and a renewed sense of achievement. Key responsibilities: Provide targeted 1:1 and small group support to students, addressing both academic and emotional needs. Work closely with teachers and pastoral staff to help students develop positive behaviour strategies, emotional regulation skills, and confidence in the classroom. Support the delivery of tailored interventions and individual support plans designed to meet each student’s unique needs. Build strong, trusting relationships with students to foster engagement, motivation, and a sense of belonging. Encourage greater participation in learning and school life, helping students re-engage with education. Remain calm under pressure and effectively de-escalate challenging situations when they arise. Collaborate with teachers, SENCOs, and external professionals to monitor progress and support student wellbeing and long-term success.
