So, you’re eager to learn more about nursing opportunities in our Pre-Operative Assessment Department, here at North Bristol NHS Trust?

1. Our Pre-Op Assessment Unit is based in Weston clinic at Southmead Hospital. The Pre-Assessment clinics are nurse led which run between the hours of 07.30 – 17.30.
2. This is a highly skilled role in which you will learn to optimize a patient’s fitness to undergo anesthesia and elective surgery. A wide knowledge of clinical conditions and co-morbidities is needed in order safely assess patients.
3. Staff work autonomously and independently using clinical judgement to make the correct decision on any action to be taken to optimize the patient's health and social care.
4. Upon joining, you will work closely with 2 designated mentors who will support your training programme and learning pathway.
5. Nurses in this department work daily with a full multi-disciplinary team including, HCSW's, Anesthetists and pharmacists.

Main duties of the job

Working within our department, your main duties will include:

6. Organising and participating in the delivery of high standards of evidence-based nursing care.
7. Taking responsibility to carry out required planned, direct patient care to a high standard without direct supervision, in accordance with established nursing procedures and policies.
8. Contributing towards the health promotion for all patients by provided education, support and advice as necessary, ensuring referral to appropriate professionals or agencies as required.
9. In the absence of senior staff, taking responsibility for the delegation and supervision of appropriate work to other qualified staff, healthcare support workers and students.
10. Where relevant, be responsible and assist in the co-ordination of discharge planning in partnership with the multidisciplinary team.
11. Taking personal responsibility for treating all patients with courtesy, respecting their individual needs and maintaining confidentiality at all times.
12. Ensuring provision of a safe and therapeutic environment for all patients, relatives, visitors and colleagues.

14. Optimise a patient’s fitness to undergo anesthesia and elective surgery. A wide knowledge of clinical conditions and co-morbidities is needed in order safely assess patients.
15. Take regular responsibility to carry out required planned, direct patient care to a high standard without direct supervision in accordance with established nursing procedures and policies.
16. To report to the appropriate members of the multidisciplinary team any significant changes in a patient’s condition or situation.
17. Responsible for taking charge of the department on a regular basis in the absence of the person who has continuing responsibility.
18. Take personal responsibility as a team leader for the delivery of care of patients in a defined area.
19. To contribute towards health promotion for all patients by providing education, support, and advice, as necessary Ensure referral to appropriate professionals or agencies as required.
20. Ensure the safe ordering, administration, and custody of patients’ medication according to Trust policies and procedures.
21. In the absence of senior staff be responsible for delegation and supervision of appropriate work to other qualified staff, health care assistants and students
22. Where relevant to be responsible for and assist in co-ordinating discharge planning in partnership with the multidisciplinary team
23. Where relevant, responsible for the admission, assessment and preparation of patients undergoing treatment or investigations.
24. Escort patients to other wards or departments as required.
25. To take personal responsibility for ensuring that patients are treated with courtesy at all times, the individual needs of patients are respected, and confidentiality is maintained at all times.
26. Liaise effectively with other disciplines or departments as appropriate.
27. To be able to act in emergency situations and to be familiar with emergency procedures including fire and resuscitation.
28. To be responsible for the support and direction of junior staff in such situations according to Trust policy..
29. To be responsible for ensuring provision of a safe and therapeutic environment for all patients, relatives, visitors, and colleagues.
30. Ensure the readiness for use of special equipment and the availability of nursing supplies in conjunction with the senior nurses.
31. Ensure the safe custody of patients’ valuables and property according to Trust policies.
32. Report to nurse in charge/line manager all complaints, incidents or accidents involving self, staff, patients, visitors, and complete relevant documentation according to Trust procedure.
33. Be responsible for reporting and documenting any broken or damaged equipment according to Trust policy.
34. To have detailed knowledge of Manual handling regulations particularly with regards to the moving and handling of patients.
35. To be responsible for ensuring that assessment of patients’ manual handling needs is carried out and ensure junior staff and students follow these requirements during care delivery.
36. Ensure safe storage and disposal of substances hazardous to health in accordance with Trust policy. Ensure availability of facilities for disposal of sharps, toxic/cytotoxic waste in accordance with trust policy.
37. In support of senior staff assist with monitoring and report to ensure stock levels are maintained and that the correct quantities are in supply.
38. Monitor the use of supplies by junior staff to promote efficient use of all supplies.
39. To have an awareness of the requirements for staffing the department.
40. Undertake aspects of ward administration as agreed by the department manager.
41. Report reliably any episodes of sickness for self or that are reported to you, to the registered nurse in charge to enable skill mix to be maintained.

Person specification

Education/Training/Qualifications

Essential criteria

42. Registered Nurse with current live NMC registration
43. Evidence of continuing professional development and willingness to undertake additional training specific to Pre op Assessment

Desirable criteria

44. Teaching and assessing qualification, or willing to undertake after 2 years post registration (secured a position on this type of course

Work Experience

Essential criteria

45. At least 12 months recent experience of working as a Registered Nurse, in secondary care setting
46. Completion of training for additional clinical skills required in the ward/department.. IV drug administration, cannulation, venepuncture, ECGs

Desirable criteria

47. Physical Assessment and Clinical reasoning qualification ( PACR )
48. Experience of working in a surgical or anaesthetic care setting

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Essential criteria

49. Advanced communication skills, verbal & written, to include report writing and record keeping
50. Be comfortable with and competent to carry out Information technology based tasks and have the ability to develop these in line with the needs of the service.
51. Time management and basic problem solving skills
52. Ability to organise and effectively manage own workload
53. Sound knowledge of the guidelines set out in the NMC code of professional conduct and current Nursing Issues

Desirable criteria

54. Experience in research and clinical audit

The successful applicant(s) will normally commence at the minimum of the scale unless they have previous NHS service at the same band. Progression through the scale is by annual increments.
