Role Overview
Northumberland County Council seeks an enthusiastic, well‑motivated Education Welfare Officer to improve pupil attendance and promote the welfare, development, and protection of children across Northumberland. This role ensures the Local Authority’s statutory duties and other responsibilities for safeguarding children in relation to school attendance, elective home education, children missing education, child employment and performance licensing are carried out to the highest possible standard. The officer works on behalf of children in partnership with parents, schools, alternative providers and other professionals to enable each pupil the maximum opportunity to benefit from their educational entitlement. The role also supports schools at a whole‑school level to enhance attendance policies and practice.
Key Responsibilities
* Ensuring statutory duties and safeguarding responsibilities related to school attendance, home education, and related matters are performed to a high standard.
* Working with children, parents, schools and other professionals to maximise educational opportunities.
* Providing whole‑school support to improve policies and practice around attendance.
Qualifications & Experience
* Good general standard of education, preferably with a recognised professional qualification in social work, teaching, child care, nursing, youth and community or psychology.
* Experience working in an education or social care setting.
* Knowledge of current legislation relevant to the role.
