Offer description

At Queen Mary’s College we understand the importance of recruiting skilled and well-qualified staff to maintain excellence in all that we do. We are committed to high-quality, innovative education and student support services and pride ourselves on our welcoming, supportive and friendly environment. We never stand still and our best keeps getting better thanks to the dedication, enthusiasm and commitment of our team. Situated in 23 acres of leafy grounds, Queen Mary’s College is an inclusive, vibrant and high achieving sixth form college with a fantastic reputation both locally and nationally. Approximately 650 students are following a mathematics course of some description. About half of these are taking A Level courses, including those taking Further Mathematics. The Department is strongly committed to the principle of seeking to develop the mathematical skills of students of all abilities, ranging from those who have experienced a lack of success at previous schools through to those who wish to pursue the study of mathematics to the highest level. The Department has a reputation of excellent results and a commitment to match its curriculum and study support to the individual needs of students, the majority of whom go on to higher education at universities including Oxbridge and other highly selective institutions. Typically, 100% of A level Maths students, and 100% of our Further Mathematicians, regularly achieve A to E grades. In 2025, 68% of A level Maths students achieved a high grade (AB) – well above the national average among sixth form colleges. Significant numbers of students are helped to improve on their performance at GCSE, with a large proportion gaining their grade 4 within weeks of joining the College. Our GCSE re-sit pass rates consistently place the college in the top 5% of institutions nationally. The Maths department is committed to innovative approaches to teaching and learning and encourages staff to experiment and share good practice. Staff development is informed by the latest research into pedagogical principles and cognitive science, with a sustained focus on assessment and feedback. We have enthusiastically embraced the revised curricula for both A level and GCSE students and welcome the greater emphasis on developing the problem-solving skills that are so much in demand from employers. We also offer the highly valued level 3 Core Maths qualification alongside 3 A levels, as a one-year subsidiary course to enhance the credentials of university applicants, with results that are significantly above the national average. The Department makes extensive use of IT and students are encouraged to bring their own device to access learning resources via the internet. All rooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards and are directly linked to the Departmental website. Class sets of laptops are available for use in lessons, with wireless internet access, and graphical calculators are used to aid visualization and for use in statistical calculations. All of our classrooms have working walls to allow students to solve problems Collaboratively, sharing ideas and approaches that lead to fruitful class discussion. Teachers also have the use of a visualizer, to display student work and highlight points of presentational detail. Our priorities are to maintain and extend our examination success and to maintain high levels of student satisfaction and achievement. We seek to ensure that we provide students with a high-quality experience of learning that is innovative, interesting and challenging and helps them acquire the skills and knowledge essential for their progression. This is an exciting opportunity for a teacher to join our outstanding team and be part of our friendly and supportive environment. The person appointed may teach a range of mathematics courses within the Department or focus specifically in one area (e.g. Foundation GCSE mathematics). The intention is to create a timetable around the teaching skills and expertise of the successful candidate, as we have courses that span the whole ability spectrum. We are looking for someone with exciting ideas to build on current good practice and results. All teaching staff are expected to be a Personal Tutor to a group of students who they teach.
