Postdoctoral Research Associate – Physical Geography (Durham)
Department of Geography, Durham University – 22‑month fixed term, full‑time position.
The successful candidate will join the project “NSFGEO‑NERC Collaborative Research: Paleogeodesy at the Alaska‑Aleutian Subduction Zone – Reconstructing Earthquake Deformation and Rupture Boundaries in Time and Space”. The project is led by Dr. Simon Engelhart and funded by the UK Natural Environment Research Council.
Responsibilities
* Undertake field‑based research across two field seasons along the Alaska‑Aleutian subduction zone.
* Develop new modern and fossil diatom datasets from coastal marshes and produce statistical and chronological models to reconstruct the magnitude and timing of past relative sea‑level (land‑level) changes.
* Compare new records with existing data to reconstruct patterns, timing and magnitude of strain accumulation and release during past Alaska‑Aleutian subduction zone earthquakes.
* Prepare data, figures and text for publication and communicate interim and final findings at collaborator workshops and international science meetings.
Qualifications
* Extensive experience in developing relative sea level and/or palaeoenvironmental reconstructions using diatom data and quantitative methods.
* Experience working in remote coastal environments is an advantage.
* Proficiency in laboratory and microscope facilities is expected.
Additional Information
* Access to outstanding resources, laboratory, microscope facilities and travel funding for conferences and collaboration.
* Project end date 31 March 2028.
* Desired start date April 1 2026; must be available for summer fieldwork (June–August) 2026.
