Overview
At Leonardo, we have a fantastic new opportunity for a Spur gear Process Engineer within the Transmissions Centre of Excellence function. Working within the Helicopters Division, based in Yeovil, you will provide expert technical support and instruct on Spur gear manufacturing process within a busy, dedicated aerospace manufacturing team. You will experience working in a structured, technically challenging, but friendly environment to deliver manufacturing engineering activities in support of a high accuracy gear shop - gear hobbing, shaping, grinding and inspection machines, comprising carburized and nitride gear ranging from 30 mm to 600 mm diameter for helicopter gear components. You will be energetic, determined and able to lead by example to ensure the highest standards and quality, whilst adhering to company processes and procedures. You will strengthen the department’s overall skill set with new ideas, skills and a structured approach to improve our process and product. You will be responsible for development projects and standardization of processes. This is a rewarding role, which supports the business in meeting deliverables against quality and cost.

What you will do as a Process Engineer
* Provide technical support and expertise for the manufacture of spur and helical gears operations and associated processes through clear and concise manufacturing instructions, creating and maintaining standard procedures for working such as best practices tools and equipment, process review, non-conformance reviews and technique sheets.
* Utilise existing strategies and develop strategies for improving product quality within the gear manufacturing area to reduce non-conformance by addressing causes of excessive stock removal, focusing on right first time and consistent conforming product.
* Develop knowledge and expertise of tooling requirements for hobbing, shaping, gear grinding and inspection operations.
* Develop, create and implement best-practice working environments and practices to sustain standard practices, ensuring high standards in manufacture, driving inspection rationalisation and tolerance evaluation.
* Keep up to date with advances and improvements in specific technology through seminars, working parties, other experts and training courses.
* Develop and deliver improvement action plans and initiatives.
* Ensure departmental procedures are maintained and created in support of process improvements and sustainability, including tooling condition monitoring, Manufacturing Engineering standard text and process instructions.
* Deliver process improvements based on knowledge and new technology being developed in the industry.
* Support technical discussion and create capital investment technical specifications for machine acquisition in the relevant field.
* Provide technical expertise to Manufacturing and Design Engineers to help ensure product planning and design definitions meet the requirements for Spur gear manufacture.
* Support operations with technical input by providing advice and solutions to overcome daily problems and challenges to help meet DSA and quality requirements through operations.
* Update manufacturing layouts as required to ensure operation instructions are in line with best practice. Produce rework planning documentation as required.
* Ensure relevant specifications are reviewed and adopted where applicable, advising supervision, management and Manufacturing Engineering management of impacts.
* Support audits on gear manufacturing process and M.E. procedures to business compliance.
What you’ll bring
You really must have:
* Educated to at least HNC or Degree in Engineering discipline with a strong technical background and at least five years relevant manufacturing experience.
* Excellent organizational skills to manage conflicting requirements and multiple projects.
* Ability to drive change and process improvements activities.
* Detailed understanding of gear manufacturing processes, cutting, grinding, inspection and non-destructive tests and methods.
* Integrity and professional approach to business needs and objectives, and ability to negotiate win-win results during conflict.
* Good understanding of working with CATIA (V5), ENOVIA or 3D software.
* Familiar with Lean Manufacturing techniques.
It would be nice if you had:
* A working knowledge of MRP systems; SAP is desirable but not essential.
* High level of ability with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
* Working knowledge of machine operation, setting and/or CNC programming.
* Familiar with an engineering change and documentation process.
* An awareness of Health and Safety.
