Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Forensic Science (DFS) is seeking a qualified applicant to assist examiners in the Firearms and Toolmarks Section of the Eastern Laboratory. Duties include assisting examiners with the preservation and transfer of evidentiary crime scene materials, particularly dealing with various aspects of firearms and toolmarks evidence. Also, assisting with laboratory support functions such as: quality control of critical reagents and equipment; preventive and routine maintenance on equipment, reagent preparation, database entry of case information, inventory/order of supplies related to firearms analysis and general laboratory upkeep, including helping to maintain the tidiness of the laboratory and restocking consumable supplies.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Experience working in a scientific laboratory environment using basic laboratory equipment, techniques, and laboratory safety procedures
2. Knowledge of the theory and application of natural science and general mathematics as they relate to the storage and preservation of crime scene evidence
3. Ability to maintain accurate records, analyze and interpret data, follow written protocols and oral instructions, manage multiple tasks efficiently, establish work priorities, and independently perform routine duties
4. Proficiency in administrative type duties: Responding to and directing business-related telephone calls to the appropriate person Setting up and maintaining files Using Microsoft Office Suite programs
5. Ability to communicate in a clear, concise manner, both verbally and in writing
6. Valid driver’s license and/or other means of reliable transportation

Additional Considerations

7. Work experience with chain of custody in a laboratory environment
8. Experience working in a scientific laboratory environment operating and maintaining laboratory instrumentation
9. Experience working in a scientific laboratory environment preparing solutions and reagents
10. Experience using computers in laboratory environment
11. Experience with and/or knowledge of firearms

Background Investigation: Selected candidate(s) must successfully pass a background investigation to include a fingerprint-based criminal history check. Selected candidate(s) must provide a DNA sample via a buccal swab (saliva sample) and successfully pass a drug test. Reference checks will be conducted to include contact with current and previous supervisors.
