SENIOR INFRASTRUCTURE ENGINEER

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Infrastructure Engineer to join our ICT team in the UK (Birmingham or London). This role is crucial in designing, implementing, and maintaining our enterprise infrastructure while ensuring optimal performance, security, and scalability of our systems.

Your role includes:


• Join Design and Implementation team for building complex infrastructure solutions across on-premises and cloud environments


• Acting as a technical reference point for the infrastructure team and collaborating with cross-functional teams


• Managing infrastructure modernization initiatives and technology evolution


• Ensuring high availability, disaster recovery, and business continuity of critical systems


• Contributing to strategic planning and architectural decisions for the IT infrastructure


• Working close to the hardware and data center layer, and contributing as an individual expert

The role has a strong bias towards Data Center server deployment and management to best practice standards, with network and firewall management requiring support for both Private and Public cloud setting.

Key responsibilities:


• Design, document, deploy, and manage enterprise infrastructure including servers, storage, networking, and virtualization platforms


• Translate system, software, and operational requirements into scalable, resilient infrastructure designs


• Implement and maintain monitoring, backup, and disaster recovery solutions


• Ensure infrastructure security compliance and implement best practices for system hardening


• Troubleshoot complex technical issues related to hardware, networking, and data center environments and provide Level 3 support


• Plan and execute infrastructure upgrades, migrations, and capacity planning


• Document infrastructure architecture, processes, and procedures


• Collaborate with DevOps, Security, and Development teams to ensure infrastructure aligns with application needs, and to optimize framework performance


•Support implementation and deployment activities where required


• Conduct data centre assessments, site visits, and infrastructure reviews


• Participate in on-call rotation for critical infrastructure support


• Contribute to technical standards, best practices, and long-term infrastructure decisions

Requirements:


• Strong experience in infrastructure engineering and hardware design, not just implementation or system administration


• Strong expertise in virtualization technologies (VMware vSphere, KVM, or similar)


• Proven experience with data center environments and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure)


• Solid understanding of enterprise infrastructure architectures (compute, storage, networking)


• Comfortable operating in project-based, high-intensity delivery environments


• Experience with Linux and Windows server administration, and system hardware management


• Knowledge of storage solutions (SAN, NAS, object storage)


• Understanding of security best practices and compliance frameworks


• Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills


• Ability to work independently and as part of a team


• Willing and able to travel frequently within the UK

Nice to have:


• Relevant certifications (AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator, VMware VCP, CCNP, or similar)


• Experience with container orchestration platforms (Kubernetes, etc.)


• Experience with monitoring and observability tools (Checkmk, Prometheus, Grafana, ELK Stack)


• Familiarity with ITIL framework and IT service management


• Experience with database administration (SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL)


• Knowledge of backup solutions (Veeam, Commvault, or similar)


• Previous experience in infrastructure migration projects


• Knowledge of Fortinet and Cisco networking stacks

Personal profile:


• Personable and enthusiastic. The successful candidate should be commercially aware and able to communicate with others clearly in relation to technical matters


• Flexible and willing to learn. The role is varied and provides new challenges daily


• Ability to align remotely, working with distributed teams


• Leadership together with a strong team building aptitude are essential


• Willingness to travel – London, Maidenhead, Manchester, Birmingham and others. The successful candidate must be prepared to travel to these Data Centre's / Offices (at the company's expense) when required. Overseas travel may occasionally be required.
