Candidates interested in developing a career in Ophthalmology will have the opportunity to develop a range of relevant skills, working in glaucoma, medical retina, cataract and emergency eye clinics. One of the busiest and most clinically diverse specialities, ophthalmology provides the perfect platform to build your nursing career. You will contribute to the provision of elective and emergency care, all while developing your skills and knowledge in our Teaching Hospitals.
Main duties of the job
* Maintain a high standard of patient focused care in accordance with York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust policies and procedures
* Maintain a safe and clean working environment
* Undertake a wide range of diagnostic tests such as visual acuity, visual fields, intra-ocular pressures following the completion of a robust training program
* Support care for patients with eye emergencies, both during the working day and in regular overnight on-calls to support the medical team
* Provide assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care for patients, ensuring accurate written records are kept
* Communicate with patients and carers to ensure they have access to appropriate information
* Promote and maintain positive relationships between all staff involved in the care of the patient
* Act in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Conduct and The Trust's Values (kindness, openness, excellence)
* Undertake duties on different wards/departments as and when required by service demands
* Demonstrate personal responsibility for compliance with infection control policies and procedures

Person Specification
Qualifications
* UK NMC Registered Nurse (Level 1 or 2)
* If you are an overseas nurse you must have completed your OSCE and hold valid IELT/OET Certificates. (If you are not an overseas nurse please state not applicable)
Experience
* Knowledge of current issues in healthcare and Standards of professional practice
* Ability to demonstrate and explain skills to other staff
* Awareness or experience of specialty: Ophthalmology
* Understanding of the needs of patients with sight impairments
* Understanding or experience of working with patients with disabilities
Knowledge
* Understanding of skills and knowledge required to develop team members
* Enthusiastic and self motivated
* Committed to working with people
