Senior Cardiac Physiologist

Job summary

We are looking for a specialised cardiac physiologist to join our CRM and Cath Lab services, which include EP service, pacing and complex device implant and follow‑up, angiography, PCI, and a 24/7 primary PCI service. The role involves working across all non‑invasive areas of the department and supporting the expanding services within the trust.


Main duties of the job

To be competent and responsible for carrying out a wide range of complex invasive and non‑invasive cardiac investigations supporting our CRM, cath lab and non‑invasive services. To participate in the on‑call rota for primary PCI.

No direct supervision; when necessary, refer to a highly specialised lead physiologist or head of department for assistance. The role will involve supervision and training of staff, organisational duties to support the smooth daily running of the department, and continued development of highly specialised procedure skills and pursuit of professional accreditation in CRM.


Job Responsibilities

* Provide physiologist support during complex device/pacemaker and implantable loop recorder implants and follow‑ups; analyse complex data and re‑programme parameters.
* Undertake specialised physiologist role in the invasive PCI service; perform unsupervised monitoring of cardiac haemodynamics and intra‑cardiac pressures, alert physicians to any changes.
* Lead cardiac physiologist‑led Exercise Tolerance Tests (ETTs) – analyse and report results without supervision, and provide support during medically supervised ETTs.
* Prepare, download, analyse recordings from 24‑hr ambulatory ECG recorders, blood pressure recorders, cardiac event recorders, and produce written reports.
* Perform electrocardiograms on all patient categories; interpret results and inform physicians of abnormalities.
* Setup and conduct tilt‑table testing, following strict procedures.
* Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation in emergencies.
* Maintain and operate cardiac catheterisation and EP laboratory equipment according to departmental protocols.
* Maintain confidentiality of patient information and uphold Trust and professional guidelines at all times.


Training and Development

* Undergo mandatory training to maintain duties; continue professional development; keep skills updated.
* Complete all mandatory Trust training annually.
* Assist in teaching and training staff and other medical staff outside the profession.
* Undertake annual Immediate Life Support updates.
* Work towards specialist accreditation (BHRS, BSE, etc.).

Personal Qualities

* Basic computer skills.
* Good written and communication skills.
* Persuasive and motivational skills required for reluctant patients.
* Good initiative, confidence, conscientiousness, politeness.
* Good time management and flexible approach.
* Smart appearance.
* Ability to relate to the general public.
* Good team working skills.


Experience

* Significant relevant previous experience as a cardiac physiologist.
* Previous experience across a broad range of cardiology investigations including echocardiography, complex devices, and PCI.


Qualifications

* BSc in Clinical Physiology or equivalent.
* Prepared to attend training courses appropriate to the post.
* BHRS / EHRA / IBHRE accreditation (working towards).
* SCST (parts 1 & 2) or equivalent.
* Current ILS certification.
* Voluntary registration for ACHS / HCPC.
