Overview
Rosemary Ward is a 33 bedded, Community Assessment Bed (CAB) unit situated within Newmarket Community Hospital, about thirteen miles from West Suffolk Hospital. The unit has been commissioned by West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust and is hosted by West Suffolk Hospital. We are looking to recruit full and part time Nursing Assistants to join our team on Rosemary Ward at Newmarket Hospital. The unit is a dynamic, nurse and therapy-led environment with a highly supportive multi-disciplinary team. We pride ourselves on compassionate holistic care, placing patients’ needs and wishes at the heart of everything we do. No formal qualification is required but a genuine interest in caring and effective communication is essential, and the ability to work a combination of long days, twilights, nights and weekends.
Main duties
* Hygiene: Assist patients with maintenance of personal and oral hygiene, including washing and bathing, mouth and dental care, hair-washing, nail care, shaving, dressing and undressing; assist patients to use toilet facilities.
* Mobility: Assist patients with mobility using manual handling risk assessment and safe manual handling.
* Nutrition: Assist patients to eat and drink as per identified care needs; identify, record and report abnormal dietary and fluid intake.
* Clinical activities: Measure and observe the physical characteristics/condition of patients (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, weight, MEWS/CREWS, oxygen saturation); use assessment tools to document pain; measure patients’ blood sugar if required.
* Maintenance: Undertake basic cleaning and decontamination of communal equipment between patient use and/or storage.
* Communication: Communicate effectively and sensitively with patients, relatives and colleagues, referring to senior staff as necessary.
* Privacy and dignity: Promote patients’ equality, diversity and rights; maintain confidentiality of patient information at all times.
* Training: Complete the initial training period required to demonstrate knowledge, skills and attitudes in line with Care Certificate Standards and all mandatory training.
Qualifications and experience
* Essential: Holds National Care Certificate or be willing to undertake and complete within 12 weeks of starting.
* Experience working in a healthcare, social care organisation/setting or service industry requiring people contact.
* Ability to work with staff from a diverse range of backgrounds; ability to work alone or in a small team.
* Good communication skills (written and verbal); effective use of electronic solutions to support patient care; ability to carry out well-defined routine tasks; able to work on own initiative under supervision of a Registered Healthcare Practitioner.
* Personal qualities: committed to delivering high standards of patient care; friendly, open, empathetic and compassionate; professional, with a positive attitude; able to meet the flexible needs of the role and duty roster.
Desirable
* National Care Certificate holder; Functional skills level 1 Maths and English or GCSE equivalent; previous experience as a Health Care Support Worker.
* Experience of working within a healthcare environment; ability to escalate concerns; ability to work in a multi-agency team.
