Job overview

Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (BHRUT) is a large teaching Trust in North East London, providing outstanding healthcare to our local community. We have a national and international reputation for specialist services including stroke, renal, neurosciences, cancer and trauma care.

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Corporate Quality and Safety Team for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to support the Trust's patient safety agenda. The team leads on incident management, risk and compliance, clinical audit and legal services, working closely with clinical and corporate teams across the organisation.

The successful candidate will have a clinical background, experience in clinical governance, and expertise in patient safety incident investigations and report writing. You will possess excellent communication, analytical and facilitation skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with clinical staff and managers at all levels.

A strong understanding of incident investigation processes, the national Patient Safety Strategy and the Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF) is essential. You will be proactive, innovative and committed to improving patient safety and quality of care across the Trust.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will be responsible for working with the Corporate Quality and Safety Team and Clinical Group Teams to lead a high-quality process for
investigating and identifying learning from patient safety incidents across the organisation.

The post holder will work with Clinical Group Representatives to identify learning and changes in practice that need to occur to prevent or reduce the likelihood of reoccurrence of similar incidents or improve the overall safety and quality of care provided.

The post holder will work autonomously as an investigator and in conjunction with subject matter experts and clinical colleagues, escalating any identified
risks to the corporate Quality and Safety Team.

The post holder will be responsible for the day-to-day management of learning responses, ensuring that PSIRF investigation guidance is followed consistently and that learning responses are completed and published in a timely manner.

Working for our organisation

We’re an organisation that is getting better and better and our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we’re proud of and our patients are happy with.

They are benefitting from a new electronic patient record (we were the last acute trust in London to introduce one) and our maternity services have been rated good by the Care Quality Commission.

We operate from two main sites – KGH in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two busy emergency departments with more than 346,000 people visiting them last year. We’re campaigning to secure the £35m we need to transform the A&E at Queen’s and get rid of corridor care.

We’re proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre, Radiotherapy Centre and Hyper Acute Stroke Unit. We’re also part of the North East London Cancer Alliance.

We run a Women’s Health Hub in Ilford; an Ageing Well Centre in Hornchurch; and Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) at Barking Community Hospital and at St George’s Health and Wellbeing Hub. These CDCs are open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The majority of our 8,400 staff – who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. Many can work flexibly and more than 400 of them are on our Ofsted accredited apprenticeship programmes. We’re proud to be a London Living Wage employer.
