The Laboratory of Medical Sciences (LMS) at Hammersmith Hospital is a directly funded MRC research institute that enjoys close links with Imperial College and the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. LMS research focuses on high-quality basic and disease-focused science. Detailed information on the research and facilities can be found on the website: www.lms.mrc.ac.uk.
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated candidate to lead the LMS Bioinformatics Facility.
The Head of Bioinformatics will proactively manage and develop the Institute’s overall bioinformatics and computational biology strategy and provision in line with current and future requirements. This includes leadership, line management, and direction of the Bioinformatics Facility team, project management of the Facility’s work, and management of its budget. The Head of Bioinformatics will actively engage in data analysis and the development of cutting-edge analysis methodologies as well as providing high-level direction to the Bioinformatics Facility and wider Institute. The post requires an in-depth knowledge of current bioinformatics methods and a strong, practical, understanding of biological statistics – the group works with a variety of data types, including bulk and single cell applications of RNAseq, epigenetic techniques, and, increasingly, multiome, and spatial technologies.
Experience working within a core facility or within an equivalent research, industrial, or commercial setting is essential. Knowledge and strong ability using and managing High Performance Computing (HPC) environments is required, as well as competency with pipelining software (Nextflow / Snakemake), version control (GitHub), and software containers (Singularity / Docker). Demonstrable experience in relevant programming languages (R & Python) and of good coding practices are expected.
