Shape the future of naval engineering with a role that safeguards national security
At Babcock, we’re working to create a safe and secure world, together. If you join us, you can play your part as a Principal Configuration Management Engineering Technician at Devonport, Rosyth or Bristol, near Plymouth / Dunfermline / Bristol, respectively.
The role
As a Principal Configuration Management Engineering Technician, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the integrity of configuration data across major new shipbuilding programmes—programmes that sit at the heart of the UK’s defence and maritime capability. Your expertise will contribute directly to projects that protect lives, strengthen national resilience and support some of the most advanced naval vessels in operation today.
This role will see you lead a dedicated and experienced Configuration Management team, giving you the opportunity to develop your leadership capabilities and influence engineering delivery across the full product lifecycle. Your work will shape the accuracy, quality and reliability of vessel configuration information from concept design through build, commissioning and into service support.
Day-to-day, you’ll have the following responsibilities:
1. Provide leadership to the Configuration Management project team, delivering high‑quality Configuration Management services throughout the lifecycle of new vessel builds.
2. Build and maintain strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders across the naval and shipbuilding community.
3. Provide engineering support, technical expertise and advice on the Configuration Account and associated documentation.
4. Ensure configuration data is accurate, up‑to‑date and available to support technical decision‑making by Design Authorities and key stakeholders.
5. Deliver Configuration Management outputs to time, cost and quality.
This is a full‑time role based at Devonport, Rosyth or Bristol. Hybrid working patterns are available. Occasional UK travel may be required.
Essential experience of the Principal Configuration Management Engineering Technician:
6. Expertise in interpreting engineering documentation (drawings, technical records, etc.) to maintain configuration records.
7. Strong understanding of change management principles and control of technical and project documentation.
8. Extensive knowledge and practical experience of Ministry of Defence processes and publications.
9. Experience creating and managing Configuration Management Plans, with strong knowledge of relevant Defence Standards.
10. Good knowledge of naval engineering or Royal Navy vessels, and the CADMID product lifecycle.
Qualifications for the Principal Configuration Management Engineering Technician:
11. HNC or BTEC Level 4 in a STEM discipline (or working towards via professional development).
12. Working towards or intending to work towards Incorporated Engineer status via an appropriate Engineering Institution.
13. Working towards or holding a recognised Configuration Management qualification (e.g., Configuration Management for Practitioners, CM2).
