Abbots Care is an award-winning care provider. We provide round-the-clock care packages to support people including children, young people and adults who have long term health conditions to live in the comfort and safety of their own home. Please note that applicants must have the right to work in the UK. We cannot accept overseas applicants. We are now looking for experienced live-in carers to support a male client in his early forties. He sustained a high-level spinal injury (C4) whilst snowboarding in 2007. Since then he has needed a comprehensive full-time care package to allow him to live as independently as possible. This client lives in a village near Witney in West Oxfordshire, 13 miles from Oxford. He lives with his wife and 2 young children. He works full time (37 hours/week, mainly from home) as a senior software engineer, using voice-recognition software and other assistive technology. Outside of work, he is interested in sport, music and theatre, and has an active social life, with frequent outings in his wheelchair and in his Motability van. Experience of working within the care sector is essential for this role, with real dedication to enabling a client living with severely limited mobility to be live as independently as possible. Abbots Care provides an extensive training programme including the Care Certificate, as well as complex care training tailored to each client’s unique needs. Full training for this role will be provided by our in-house community nurse assessor, who works closely with our clients with complex care needs. This tetraplegic client (paralysed from the shoulders down) requires regular personal care, catheter care, bowel management and sleep apnoea prevention. Schedule : carers will usually work 2 weeks on duty followed by 2 weeks off duty, rotating with another live-in carer. Breaks are scheduled through the day. Nights out may involve late hours occasionally, but carers are rarely required after the client is settled for the night. The support required includes: - day to day living tasks including personal hygiene, cooking, feeding, provision of frequent drinks (at least 2L water per day); also routine housework - a daily rigorous morning routine which includes stretches, exercises, and use of a standing-frame. There is a ceiling-tracked hoist to help with transfers between bed and wheelchair. - regular catheter care, assistance with personal care and bowel management - driving – including a weekly trip to the client’s workplace, and routine care there - frequent outings with client and family members, meeting up with friends, dining out, music gigs, theatre etc. - occasional holidays in UK and abroad. Essentials: candidates will need: - the right to work in UK (Abbots Care does not provide visa sponsorship) - a minimum of 1 year’s UK experience of providing live-in care, preferably with spinal injury client(s). - ability to learn routines quickly and to use initiative to solve problems - good listening skills, good hearing, and fluent English language skills - to be physically fit, strong and able (this client’s height is 6’3”). - a full and clean UK manual driving licence for Motability van - readiness to work in a family setting, with young children - organisational ability, and a pro-active attitude to the job, The salary starts at £1000.00 per week, with £50.00 per week food allowance. Carers have their own bedrooms and shared bathroom on the first floor of the client’s home, in a rural setting. There is a large garden. There are many reasons to join the Abbots Care team.
