Abersychan Group Practice serves approximately 10,600 patients and has provided general medical services in the area for over 40 years. The practice is situated in Abersychan, on the A4043 between Pontypool and Blaenavon, within easy reach of Newport and the M4 motorway.


Job Summary

Pay Per Session: £11,000.00
Sessions per week: Up to 4
Start date: 1 March 2026 (flexible for the right candidate)

The post is a salaried general practitioner position, supporting a practice with seven GP partners, two salaried GPs, one GP retainer, one ANP, four practice nurses, one HCA, two phlebotomists, and a team of receptionists and administrators.


Key Responsibilities

* Undertake surgery consultations, telephone consultations, and home visits.
* Check, sign repeat prescriptions, and manage queries, paperwork and correspondence.
* Make professional, autonomous decisions regarding patient problems.
* Assess health needs for patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed conditions.
* Screen patients for disease risk factors and early signs of illness.
* Develop care plans in consultation with patients following current disease‑management protocols.
* Provide counselling and health education.
* Admit or discharge patients, and refer to appropriate care providers.
* Record clear and contemporaneous consultation notes to agreed standards.
* Collect data for audit purposes and contribute to evaluation/audit and clinical standard‐setting.
* Compile and issue computer‑generated acute and repeat prescriptions.
* Prescribe in accordance with the practice formulary and local/national guidelines.
* Contribute to the development and maintenance of computer‑based patient records and read‑coding.
* Attend training and events organised by the practice or other agencies.
* Maintain confidentiality and comply with all relevant policies regarding patient data.
* Support equality, diversity and rights of patients, carers and colleagues.
* Participate in continuous professional development and annual performance reviews.
* Advise on and implement health and safety and infection control procedures.


Qualifications

* Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) from a recognised institution.
* Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC).
* Completion of Foundation Training or equivalent clinical experience.
* Valid and current professional indemnity insurance.
* Up‑to‑date knowledge of medical treatments, procedures and emerging healthcare issues.
* Desirable: additional qualifications such as family medicine, public health, or specialist GP training.


Experience

* In-depth understanding of medical conditions, treatments, and patient care protocols.
* Diagnostic, decision‑making and problem‑solving skills.
* Proficiency in using electronic medical records systems and other healthcare IT platforms.
* Knowledge of current clinical guidelines and standards.
* Excellent communication skills with patients, families and colleagues.
* Understanding of safeguarding protocols for vulnerable adults and children.
* Desirable: specialised knowledge in areas such as elderly care, chronic disease management, or palliative care.


Additional Criteria

* Eligibility to work in the UK.
* Valid, clean driving licence (if home visits or travel required).
* Compassionate and patient‑focused approach to care.
* Strong interpersonal, organisational and time‑management skills.
* Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
* Willingness to keep learning, develop professionally and adapt to changing needs.
* Leadership qualities (desirable).
