Locum Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology

Our local Clinical Biochemistry department provides a comprehensive array of endocrine tests, supporting regular dynamic endocrine testing. All imaging modalities, including PET-CT scanning, are available to support endocrine work-up. We have the support of the nuclear medicine department for the treatment of benign and malignant thyroid disease. The ENT department offers thyroid and parathyroid surgery services, and a regular thyroid multidisciplinary meeting occurs on the Canterbury site. We maintain strong links with the pituitary and adrenal MDTs based at King's College Hospital, London, for specialized endocrine referrals.
All consultants joining our Diabetes and Endocrinology department will have the opportunity to develop professionally, expand their skill set, and contribute to the service. We are committed to providing high-quality care to our patients, managing both general diabetes and endocrine problems.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will support diabetes and endocrinology services at William Harvey Hospital. They will collaborate with other D+E physicians in the Trust to share facilities and ensure continuity and high standards of care. Clinics will be held at William Harvey Hospital, Royal Victoria Hospital Folkestone, and Buckland Hospital, Dover. Integrated Diabetes Care has been adopted in East Kent.
The role involves supporting primary care in managing the majority of diabetic patients not requiring specialist care. This includes liaising with GPs, participating in education programs for practice staff, responding to email requests for clinical advice, and working closely with community-based specialist nurses. The appointee will share supervision of junior staff, including 1 Specialist Registrar, 1 Foundation Year 1 trainee on a 4-month rotation, 1 Foundation Year 2 trainee, and 1 Core Trainee in their first year. The junior doctor programs are currently under review to optimize training opportunities.
