Training Programme Director – General Internal Medicine (GIM)

The role of Training Programme Director is to work with and support the Postgraduate Dean in leading the delivery of a wide range of functions within General Internal Medicine, aligned to the NHS England mandate.

Educator roles are usually recruited for a fixed 3‑year term, maximum of two terms, but the current contract is until 31 March 2027. Salary contributions are in line with TPD sessional payments at £10,000 per session; discussion with employer is required prior to application.


Key Responsibilities


Education and Training Quality Improvement and Performance

* Promote the development of a quality learning environment for all learners.
* Ensure equity of access to learning opportunities in an environment free from negative workplace behaviours.
* Support Postgraduate Deans in meeting all NHS England statutory requirements.


Patient Safety and Healthcare Quality Improvement

* Assist in the development of quality processes complementary across the healthcare workforce.
* Support the use of clinical skills training and simulation (where appropriate), stressing teamwork and human factors.


School Programme Management

* Oversee the Specialty's Regional Training Programme and advise Postgraduate Deans and Heads of School on specialist matters, recruitment, programme management, assessments, progression, rotations, support and remediation, inter‑deanery transfer, academic training and related work‑streams.
* Provide reports to the Specialty Training Committee and School Board.
* Complete the annual school development plan.


Intelligence Support / Provision

* Ensure local intelligence processes inform quality management.
* Engage with information systems (trainee database, post establishments).


Strategic Workforce Development and Commissioning

* Contribute to workforce planning and engagement with local and national processes.
* Develop educational programmes to achieve curriculum competencies and support commissioning where required.
* Identify and support implementation of alternative workforce solutions.
* Advise on commissioning and decommissioning activities.


Finance

* Engage with financial business planning processes and School budgets.
* Ensure compliance with procurement requirements.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* Membership or fellowship of a relevant college, faculty, professional association or regulatory body.
* Attendance at courses aimed to support educational development.
* Primary clinical healthcare qualification.
* Educational qualification such as postgraduate certificate, diploma or master’s in medical education.


Experience

* Considerable experience working with learners or doctors in training in an educational context.
* Experience of clinical and educational leadership and innovation, including managing a multi‑professional team.
* Understanding of developments involving relevant colleges/faculties, professional bodies, NHS organisations and regulatory bodies.
* Previous or current appointment as a leader in healthcare education.
* Awareness of funding streams for healthcare education.
* Understanding of current health, social care and education policy.

* Demonstrable leadership skills and an ability to influence and motivate others.
* Ability to quickly establish personal and professional credibility with colleagues and stakeholders.
* Committed to personal development and able to support others in their development and progression.
* Ability to rapidly establish academic credibility.
