Are you a compassionate and skilled professional passionate about supporting deaf and hearing-impaired students to thrive? We're partnering with inclusive primary schools across Hull to find dedicated individuals. We're seeking strong, committed professionals to join these welcoming school communities for the new academic year, starting in September 2025.
This is a crucial role where you'll make a tangible difference, helping primary-aged students overcome barriers to learning and achieve their full potential. You'll be working with pupils who have diverse hearing impairments and may have Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
About the Role
As a Hearing Impaired Teaching Assistant (HI TA), your main responsibilities will include:
* Providing tailored communication, emotional, social, and academic support to primary pupils with hearing impairments, primarily using British Sign Language (BSL).
* Facilitating access to the curriculum and classroom activities by interpreting instructions and discussions.
* Building strong, positive relationships to encourage confidence, independence, and self-esteem in deaf and hearing-impaired children.
* Collaborating closely with teachers, SENCOs, and Teachers of the Deaf (ToD) to support EHCP outcomes and personalised learning plans.
* Helping to create a structured, inclusive, and safe learning environment where hearing impaired students feel fully supported.
* Assisting with the management and maintenance of audiological equipment (e.g., hearing aids, cochlear implants, radio aids) as required.
About You
The ideal candidate will have:
* Proficiency in British Sign Language (BSL) - a qualification (e.g., Level 2 BSL or above) is highly desirable, or demonstrable equivalent fluency.
* Experience working in an SEN setting or with children who have additional needs, particularly those with hearing impairments.
* A calm, empathetic, and patient approach, understanding the unique communication and learning styles of deaf and hearing-impaired children.
* The ability to work flexibly and effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
* Relevant qualifications such as a Level 2 or 3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning, or equivalent experience.
* A genuine passion for helping vulnerable children, especially those with hearing impairments, to thrive and access their education fully.
What We Offer
* The opportunity to make a real and lasting difference in the lives of children who need specialised communication support most.
* A chance to work within welcoming, supportive, and inclusive primary school environments across Hull.
* Competitive rates of pay in line with your skills and experience.
