Job Description
This role is an exciting opportunity for an experienced electrical engineer with expertise in high, medium, low and extra‑low voltage electrical systems and equipment to join the Environment Agency’s Standards and Engineering team as a Senior Electrical Engineer. Expertise relating to control systems design and SCADA / telemetry systems would be beneficial.
Working within our Standards, Asset Management and Engineering Directorate you will influence and shape how we deliver our service into the future. As part of our Technical Authority, you will provide technical engineering leadership and support to the whole organisation to meet our objectives of safe, reliable and sustainable assets and meet our commitments to net zero carbon.
You will be part of a team that manages, develops and maintains our electrical engineering standards, including our electrical safety rules, for our electrical systems and equipment, which includes HV and LV power systems and control systems within assets such as pumping stations, water management and flood defence structures and monitoring sites.
You will help develop, deliver and maintain competency and skills guidance for all employees managing or carrying out work on our electrical systems and equipment. You will also be required to hold a national incident response role which may be within normal working hours or out of hours.
Responsibilities
Deliver and maintain electrical engineering standards and safety rules. Provide technical engineering leadership across the organisation to ensure safe, reliable, sustainable assets. Contribute to the development of competency and skills guidance. Prepare and maintain risk assessments, method statements and traffic control plans. Provide national incident response support.
Qualifications / Experience Required
 * A good working knowledge of the Electricity at Work regulations and BS 7671 IET wiring regulations.
 * Strong control systems knowledge, including IEC 61508, IEC 62061, BS EN 13489 and telemetry/SCADA systems.
 * Knowledge of high and low voltage generation and distribution systems.
 * Experience in developing Safe systems of work, risk assessments and method statements.
 * Experience in testing and isolation of high and low voltage electrical systems and proving dead.
 * Risk‑based approach to electrical maintenance philosophies, including Failure Mode Effects Analysis and reliability systems.
 * Drafting and publishing electrical policy, instructions and guidance.
 * Excellent work management, team‑working and communication skills.
 * Current membership of a recognised engineering institution and registration as a Chartered Engineer with the UK Engineering Council, or evidence of working toward registration within 12 months.
 * UK driving licence.
Additional Information
 * This is a hybrid role, and we will allocate a base location near to your home.
 * Some travel and overnight stays may be required.
 * We will support you to find a role to suit your needs and circumstances. Appropriate training will be provided.
