CORE PURPOSE We require an exceptionally skilled, creative, and forward-thinking Design & Technology Teacher to deliver high-quality practical, theoretical, and design-led instruction across Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4, and Key Stage 5 (A-Level). Operating within a world-renowned, historic independent school environment, the successful candidate will inspire highly motivated students, blending traditional craftsmanship with advanced digital prototyping, architectural theory, and industrial design principles to prepare pupils for prestigious university placements and global creative industries. KEY TASKS & DAILY OPERATIONS Advanced Seminar & Studio Instruction: Plan and deliver academically rich, highly individualised DT and Product Design lessons that stretch pupils across all technical profiles, pushing boundaries in ergonomics, sustainability, and smart materials. Masterclass Portfolio Mentorship: Provide expert, one-to-one tutorial guidance for Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5 coursework, mentoring students through the production of high-end design folios and complex physical prototypes for GCSE and A-Level assessments. State-of-the-Art Workshop Leadership: Manage elite, university-grade workshop spaces with flawless adherence to health and safety standards, teaching traditional hand techniques alongside advanced CAD/CAM tools, CNC routing, 3D printing, and laser engineering. Extracurricular & Co-Curricular Enrichment: Contribute dynamically to the school’s extensive co-curricular programme, leading design societies, architectural masterclasses, or entering student teams into prestigious national design and engineering competitions. Boarding & Pastoral Commitment: Undertake essential pastoral and evening duties within a traditional boarding house framework, supporting the academic, social, and emotional welfare of residential and day pupils alike. ENVIRONMENT & STRUCTURE Independent House Framework: Operating completely outside the constraints of the state sector and the national curriculum, our school offers total pedagogical autonomy. The department is heavily resourced with generous budgets, allowing for bespoke project materials and cutting-edge software deployment. Campus Culture: The school features a deeply supportive, scholarly, and international community. Class sizes are strictly capped (typically under 12 pupils per workshop), and students exhibit exemplary self-discipline and an innate passion for learning, eliminating basic behaviour management and allowing for pure, high-level technical tuition. PROFILE REQUIREMENTS Qualifications: A strong honours degree in Product Design, Engineering, Architecture, or a closely related discipline from a top-tier university. While Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is welcomed, it is not mandatory for this independent position; independent school experience or a strong commercial design background is highly valued. Technical Mastery: Exceptional technical capability across both heavy workshop machinery and digital design software (such as SolidWorks, Autodesk, or Adobe Creative Suite). Holistic Educator Presence: A dedication to the all-encompassing lifestyle of a premium boarding school, including a willingness to work flexible hours, contribute to weekend activities, and embed themselves fully in house pastoral care. REGIONAL CONTEXT Shropshire Heritage & Historic Capital: Set in the beautiful, historic county town of Shrewsbury, Shropshire, the school campus overlooks a dramatic loop of the River Severn. The town offers an exceptional quality of life, matching medieval architecture, independent boutiques, and a vibrant culinary scene with immediate access to the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Connectivity: The region offers excellent transport links, providing effortless road commuting via the A5, A49, and M54 motorway links. Shrewsbury railway station operates as a major transport hub, running frequent, smooth Transport for Wales and West Midlands Railway services directly to Birmingham New Street, Chester, Manchester Piccadilly, and direct routes straight to London Euston.
