Role Purpose: Chess are looking for a talented and aspiring engineer to join our Electronics team for a year placement. The team works to develop electronics through the entire project lifecycle, ranging from bid activities, through concept and detail design into delivery and verification of the design solution. The role will also include contributing to development of the team’s processes and R&D programme. ​The student electronics engineer typically works within the team and is likely to develop skills in PCB designs including servo drive technology, developing power system architectures, processor interfacing/communications, system wiring and meeting rigorous requirements such as achieving optimal servo control performance and world leading EMC standards. Closing date for applications is 31 st October 2025 ​ Key Responsibilities: The student engineer shall be involved in designing electronics, including PCBs and wiring, plus conducting testing/fault finding of designs. The student will be supported by a mentor from the engineering team to help with personal development and induction into the business, in addition to their line manager. ​Vital to the role will be engaging proactively in learning and development, including upholding good engineering practice, and providing a systematic approach to design and testing. The student shall have a mindset for ensuring good communication, with the role including regular communications with colleagues at all levels. ​The business provides pro-active support to engineers working towards Chartered Engineering status, with several established Chartered Engineers and Fellows within the business. ​ Skills & Experience Currently working towards a strong degree in a related discipline accredited by the IET. Ability to work within project teams on multi-disciplinary projects with challenging objectives. Working to build a solid theoretical and practical understanding of electrical and electronics designs, with an ability to both design and fault find/verify solutions using lab equipment. Experience analysing circuit designs, with ability to objectively review scientific findings and outputting findings as technical reports. Familiar with principles of technical drawings and working with/supporting production to achieve the intended design output. ​ Desirable The candidate will ideally have some experience, or willingness to develop the following knowledgebase areas which highlight typical technologies and skills found within the electronics team. Student or associate member of the IET, keen to work towards Chartership (C-Eng). Experience using a range of laboratory tools such as a Multi-meter, Oscilloscope, power supply and be aware of the capability and weaknesses of these tools. Familiar in circuit design, ranging from discrete components to semiconductors, including designing and prototyping new circuit designs, and analysing performance. Interest in schematic design, including PCB layout for PCBs, ideally including manufacturing techniques. Familiar with wiring design, such as junction boxes or cable designs, including awareness of assembly techniques required to assemble electro-mechanical designs. Practised or familiar in embedded Software Design, such as C, C++, or C#. Interest in Motors and drive technology including control systems, such as PID loops. Awareness/Interest in analysis tools such as MATLAB, Simulink, or Python. ​ Personal Attributes Demonstrates our company values of Teamwork, Integrity, Excellence and Courage.
