Summary
This Maintenance Mechanic position is part of the Facility Management Service Line (FMS) at the VA Central Western Mass Healthcare System, located in Leeds, MA. This position is full-time at 40 hours per week.
Major Duties & Responsibilities
1. Installs, modifies, maintains, and repairs various piping systems including steam, natural gas, fuel oil, potable water, and fire sprinkler systems across the medical center campus, located above and below ground, within tunnels, crawl spaces, mechanical rooms, boiler plant, and inside buildings.
2. Plans and lays out piping systems, ensuring proper routing, equipment placement, elevation, pitch, and material selection. Conducts pressure and operational tests to ensure leak-free, proper circulation, flow, and pressure.
3. Calculates airflow and pressure-temperature characteristics for HVAC/R systems; locates and repairs faulty equipment swiftly to minimize downtime.
4. Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on electro-mechanical pneumatic equipment, including building service equipment, patient mobility devices, hospital beds, and gym equipment.
5. Acts as Maintenance & Operations Supervisor during brief absences, supervising shop personnel and operations.
6. Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements
Involves walking, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and lifting in tiring positions and climates. Uses manual or power tools for extended periods. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds; occasionally over 50 pounds with assistance.
