Offer description

Overview

We are looking for a dynamic and motivated Consultant Histopathologist at 10PAs, to join our team of high performing and productive consultants.

Candidates should have Full GMC registration (with a licence to practice) and be on the Histopathology Specialist Register or within 6 months of attaining their CCT or holding CESR.

Prospective candidates should hold the FRCPath or equivalent higher professional qualification.

Interested candidates will hopefully have a specialist interest in Lung and gastrointestinal pathology. An interest in medical livers and hepatobiliary specimens would also be desirable. An alternative combination or variation to the above may also be considered.

Department and workload

The Cellular Pathology Department is based on the site of Royal Derby Hospital. This is a very busy UKAS accredited department with an interesting, varied and growing workload, covering most specialities except medical renal biopsies, neuropathology and paediatric/neonatal pathology.

The department is committed to both undergraduate and postgraduate education. A commitment to the autopsy service is also desirable.

Responsibilities

* Provision of comprehensive Cellular Pathology service to the users, including advice regarding appropriate specimen collection and investigations, interpretation of reports and the preparation of policies, procedures and guidelines.
* Review and validation of laboratory reports. Answer phone calls to and from clinical colleagues.
* To be jointly responsible for the supervision, training and management of any junior staff in the department, and for the smooth and efficient running of the cellular pathology department.
* Take joint responsibility with colleagues for quality assurance within the department including taking part in national external quality assurance programmes.
* To participate in the annual appraisal process.
* Support the organisation and delivery of education and training within the department.
* Contribute to service development and policy formation as part of the multi-disciplinary team.

Our values and commitment

As a trusted organisation at the heart of our communities, we recognise the important role we can play in supporting the public, patients, our own people and local partners in achieving the best of health for the local population and the communities in which they live by providing Exceptional Care Together.

Our fundamental Values of Compassion, Openness and Excellence underpin how we intend to work as a Trust and the associated behaviours are becoming embedded in all aspects of how we work.

What we offer

In return we will offer:

* Development opportunities, including both professional and leadership development
* On-going support through every step of the way from recruitment to when you join our team and beyond.
* A variety of other staff benefits including employee assistance programme, discounted gym membership, onsite fitness classes, car schemes

Key Facts about our Trust

* We see on average 4810 OP appointments per day.
* We are the 4th busiest Trauma & Orthopaedic outpatients department in England – an average of 2077 per week.
* An average of 1115 patients are seen in A&E across our network every day – 3rd largest in the country.
* Our hospitals admit an average of 195 emergency patients daily.
* Last year we undertook almost 33,700 planned surgical operations in our 57 operating theatres.
* We are one of only 7 Trusts nationally with more than 50 operating theatres.
* We carry out more than 140 elective procedures each working day.

The department currently receives approximately 47,000 surgical and 5,000 non-gynaecological cytology specimens per year. Additionally, following the reorganisation of the cervical screening programme, the department became one of 8 hubs nationwide for HPV testing and gynae cytology.

Clinical structure and facilities

Subspecialist reporting is well developed with individuals reporting in at least 3 different areas.

Individual consultants are protected from excessive diagnostic workload by a workload management system that is based on the RCPath workload scoring system.

Each consultant Histopathologist in the department has sole use of a well-appointed office equipped with microscope and up to date IT facilities including the use of speech recognition software and proforma reporting (AES). Additionally, with the full implementation of digital pathology over the next 18 months, consultants should expect to have a digital workstation within the hospital and at home.

Please see attached job description for a detailed description of main clinical, educational, managerial and service development activities.

Location and closing

In terms of location, Derby and Burton offer the best of both worlds – city life on the doorstep of a stunning rural environment. We border the National Forest and we are in easy reach of the Peak District, offering outstanding natural beauty. Centrally located, we have excellent transport links to the rest of the country including major cities.
