Overview

PIP 1 Investigator - Assessment and Investigation Unit - AIU (Secondment / Fixed Term Contract - Oxfordshire)

Thames Valley Police are seeking highly motivated investigators to join the Assessment and Investigation Unit on a Secondment / Fixed Term Contract to June 2026.


Role Purpose

You will manage and progress the investigation of criminal offences and other incidents/enquiries as part of a mixed economy team of Police Officers and staff; complete investigative actions, maintain victim and witness confidence and facilitate successful outcomes. Successful outcomes may require the preparation of case papers, ensuring file completeness and delivery in accordance with Court deadlines, legislation and Force policy.


Accountability

* Plan, co-ordinate and undertake investigations as tasked, utilising appropriate techniques and technologies to detect and reduce crime, bringing offenders to justice
* Plan and conduct interviewing of victims, witnesses and potential suspects to identify further investigative opportunities
* Prioritise, analyse and interpret intelligence/evidence of scenes, applying forensic techniques to optimise intelligence/detection opportunities as required
* Seize exhibits when required, handling them according to current guidelines and policy
* Ensure recording and storage of intelligence to maintain continuity and evidential integrity
* Deliver a victim-centred service by engaging with, assessing and supporting victims to ensure investigations are concluded promptly in line with the Victims Code
* Identify appropriate outcomes on completion of investigations, including court or out-of-court disposals; create prosecution files as required, ensuring they are evidentially sound and compliant with CPS requirements within required timescales
* Comply with the Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act when conducting investigations
* Attend all court hearings as required to give evidence and safeguard victims and witnesses
* Identify threats, harms, opportunities and risks within crimes, flagging safeguarding concerns during interactions with the public, in coordination with other departments/agencies


Skills Required To Be Successful

* Willingness to work towards and achieve Professionalising Investigations Programme (PIP) 1 accreditation
* Good communication skills, including listening and questioning, with ability to engage empathetically with people from diverse backgrounds
* Meticulous attention to detail and ability to gather and record information effectively
* Problem solving and decision making, with ability to analyse information and assess risk and vulnerability to set priorities
* Experience of working within a team environment
* Understanding of cultural differences and experience of working in a diverse environment
* Must be able to travel to different locations across the Force; due to flexible hours and lone working requirements, a full UK driving licence is essential

Secondment details: If you are a permanent member of staff applying for this role, it will be offered on a secondment basis. All secondments are assumed supported and your line manager and Head of Department/Commander or Deputy must be aware of your intention to apply. If the secondment is not supported, a strong business rationale must be sent to RecruitmentPoliceStaff@thamesvalley.police.uk quoting the reference number for the role.

Shift allowances and other allowances from the previous role will not be protected unless attached to the new role for the duration of the secondment.
