Job Description
New Directions Education is seeking compassionate and dedicated Teaching Assistants to join our pool of support staff working across a range of Resource Provisions in Leeds. This role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about supporting learners with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN).
About the Role
As a Teaching Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting pupils who use a variety of communication methods, including symbols, signs, and spoken language, to understand and express themselves.
Working closely with teachers and speech and language therapists, you will help create an inclusive, accessible learning environment where every pupil can thrive and achieve their full potential.
You will provide support both 1:1 and in small groups, encouraging engagement, interaction, and independence through clear, consistent communication strategies tailored to each pupil’s individual needs and EHCP.
About You
We are looking for individuals who are:
Experienced in supporting pupils with Speech, Language and Communication Needs and/or Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
Confident in using, or willing to learn, Makaton, picture communication systems, symbols, and objects of reference
Patient, empathetic, and skilled in promoting positive communication and emotional regulation
Trained in Team Teach or similar therapeutic behaviour approaches (desirable but not essential)
Key Responsibilities
Use symbols, Makaton, and objects of reference consistently to support understanding and communication
Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and families to ensure consistent support strategies
Promote independence, confidence, and self-expression in all learners
Encourage positive engagement within the classroom and wider school environment
Prioritise the safety, wellbeing, and development of all pupils in your care
