Salary: £36,000 per year (funded via Access to Work) Contract: Self - employed, minimum 3 - year funding Hours: Core hours 8:00am4:00pm (flexibility required) Location: Brighton and surrounding areas (travel required) Please note, this is not a trade union-employed role. A Trade Union Representative based in the Brighton area is seeking a dedicated and reliable Support Worker to assist them in carrying out their role. The individual has a disability and requires practical and administrative support to attend meetings and manage their workload. This post is funded through Access to Work and is therefore offered on a self - employed basis. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing their own tax and National Insurance contributions. Payment will be made upon receipt of an invoice, and the role holder must be registered with HMRC for tax and National Insurance purposes. Key Responsibilities Meeting and Representation Support Accompany the representative to meetings, workplace visits, events, conferences and annual congress across various locations. Act as a sighted guide before, during and after meetings and events, including navigating unfamiliar environments. Provide practical support during meetings, including: Setting up meeting rooms and equipment Reading and interpreting visual information (e.g. documents, body language, visual cues) Taking notes and minutes Completing forms and paperwork Attend meetings either in person or virtually (Zoom, Teams, Skype, etc.). Driving and Travel Drive the representative to meetings, events and regional locations when necessary (pool car is made available for use) Accompany the representative on public transport where required. Support overnight stays for conferences, congresses and events where necessary. Administrative and Casework Support Support the preparation of casework and consultation papers, including: Reading handwritten and printed documents Typing, formatting and preparing case files and folders Scanning, emailing and filing documentation Read and manage emails and online documents. Assist with drafting emails and associated correspondence. Organise and file emails and documents in shared folders. Digital and Communication Support Assist with online and virtual meetings, including use of digital platforms. Respond to telephone calls and direct enquiries appropriately. Support the use of IT systems and programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, email, and online meeting software. Branch and Union Administration Provide general branch administration support, including: Filing and photocopying Preparing invoices and processing payments Membership reporting and database functions Mail merge, postage and correspondence Support website content updates, newsletters and social media posts. Attend and support regional Union and Branch meetings, including minute-taking and document reading. Person Specification Essential Criteria Ability to provide sighted guide support and practical assistance in meetings and unfamiliar environments. Full UK driving license with confidence to drive to multiple locations. Strong organisational and administrative skills with attention to detail. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Confidence using IT systems, including: Email and shared folders; Microsoft Word and Excel; Online meeting platforms (e.g. Zoom, Teams, Skype) Ability to read, interpret and clearly relay visual information. Experience taking notes and minutes accurately. Flexible approach to working hours, including occasional overnight stays. Ability to manage confidential and sensitive information appropriately. Reliable, punctual and able to work independently as well as part of a team Desirable Criteria Previous experience as a Personal Assistant, Support Worker or Administrative Assistant. Experience working within a Union, membership organisation or advocacy setting. Experience with website management, newsletters or social media updates. Familiarity with casework preparation or consultation documentation. Experience supporting someone with visual impairment or access needs. Basic bookkeeping or invoice preparation experience. Experience working with assistive technology
