Overview
Practice Nurse Bank Staff role at NHS. Job type: bank/agency; shifts are ad hoc and not guaranteed.
Job Responsibilities
* Participate in national screening work such as cervical cytology and deliver the national immunisation and vaccination schedule. Maintain robust call and recall systems.
* Administer child and adult immunisations and vaccinations in accordance with national and local programmes. Competent in anaphylaxis and resuscitation techniques. Ensure safe storage, rotation and disposal of vaccines and drugs and that adequate stock levels are maintained.
* Cytology/smears; provide comprehensive travel health advice for patients prior to travel including vaccines (e.g., yellow fever) and health information (diet, sun protection, etc.).
* Make professionally autonomous decisions for which the nurse is accountable and provide safe, evidence-based, cost-effective, individualised patient care.
* Care for patients with uncomplicated wounds (e.g., removal of sutures, wound care, burns, ulcers) and perform Doppler assessment where appropriate.
* Carry out screening/testing (urine tests, blood pressure, glucose, weight/height, etc.) and refer to other primary, community or secondary care team members as needed.
* Break bad news to patients/parents/carers and provide ongoing support; promote health education on diet, contraception, smoking cessation, exercise, chronic disease management, etc.
* Evaluate patient test results with the patient and GP to determine appropriate treatment where necessary.
* Liaise with the practice team; work within the multidisciplinary team across the wider health system.
Administration
* Maintain accurate patient records according to NMC standards and complete all necessary documentation; ensure data protection requirements are met.
* Collect data, participate in regular Practice audits and research projects; contribute to Practice development plans.
Teaching and Mentoring
* Promote a learning environment for patients, nurses and other professionals; assist with planning and delivering teaching for practice staff, including medical/nurse students and healthcare assistants; participate in clinical supervision.
Managerial Role
* Participate in protocol development including PGDs; ensure relevant practice policies are implemented. Maintain stock and supplies (clinical, vaccines, information literature) and provide purchasing records to the practice manager.
* Support CQC requirements including infection control audits, COSHH, cold chain, sharps handling and clinical waste.
General
* Maintain annual NMC registration and adhere to the Code of Professional Conduct; maintain a safe and therapeutic environment; ensure statutory regulations (Health & Safety, COSHH, etc.) are followed.
* Maintain professional appearance and attitude; continue professional development; undertake mandatory training; attend staff and Practice meetings and in-house training; perform any other reasonable duties as required.
Qualifications
Essential
* RGN Qualification
* Current NMC Registration
* Accredited training in chronic disease management
* Cervical cytology qualification
Desirable
* Accredited training in anticoagulation management
Experience
Essential
* Up-to-date training in childhood immunisations
* 2 years post-registration at E grade
* Health promotion
Desirable
* Family planning
* Smoking cessation
* Evidence of recent updating in primary care
* Experience with (Clinical system) or relevant systems
Additional Information
* Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check required; post subject to Rehabilitation of Offenders Act exceptions order.
* UK registration is required.
