Job Summary
Number 1 Radio School (No.1 RS) is the home of training for the Royal Air Force (RAF) Cyberspace Profession and foremost provider of technical education to the Service’s Information & Communication Technology (ICT) engineering specialists - in addition to selected Royal Navy, British Army, civilian and international military personnel.
Structured under the Defence School of Communications & Information Systems (DSCIS) within the Defence College of Technical Training (DCTT), No.1 RS is a venerable and historic military training institution whose origins in the field of communications training can be traced back in excess of 100 years.
As the school embarks-upon a second century of excellence, its ‘whole-force’ military / Civil Service workforce blend are pivotal to the development of ICT training delivery to meet the significant demands of information-centric 5th-generation RAF platforms and capabilities. In doing so, their approach and commitment to public service remains fully commensurate with No.1 RS’ legendary motto: Thorough.
No.1 RS trains officers, aviators, soldiers, sailors and civilians in cyberspace capabilities at RAF Cosford and RAF Digby. Each year, the School typically develops 1300 Phase 3 (pre-employment/career) trainees, 300 Phase 2 (initial technical training) officer/aviator trainees and students undergoing a cyberspace engineering foundation degree pathway.
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join No.1 RS at a crucial juncture in the School’s evolution. There is currently a vacancy for a Burnham Lecturer (BL), whose outputs are instrumental to the provision of a comprehensive range of services to the School and its trainees.
Reporting to the Officer Commanding Academic & Accreditation Group (OC AAG) No.1 RS BLs provide a breadth of academic training, which underpins the delivery of force-generational and operational outputs for Defence.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
Job Description
No.1 RS Defence Trainers are a 'whole-force' mix of Armed Services (predominantly serving members of the RAF) and Civil Service instructors / lecturers, who deliver world-class technical training to a broad audience of trainees across a varied ICT curriculum.
Under the direction of No.1 RS' Academic Lead (Senior BL), the School's BLs provide an extensive portfolio of academic education to trainees who are either beginning their Service careers or undertaking pre-employment training for roles they are due to be assigned into.
Specific duties for BLs include the following key areas of responsibility:
* Delivery of technical training in accordance with line management direction and established MOD governance frameworks, such as the Defence Systems Approach to Training.
* Monitoring the progress of learners, engagement with Trainee Development co-ordinators and provision of targeted assistance.
* Development of learning material for new and existing Defence technical training pathways, in conjunction with internal and external stakeholders.
* Participation in the No.1 RS Learning Assessment Support process and continuous improvement initiatives, in support of quality assurance and business development priorities.

Entry requirements to the BL Group will normally be a minimum of a degree or equivalent in a relevant subject. Exceptionally, candidates with significant experience of teaching may be allowed entry with Level 4 qualifications (HNC/HND/FdSc) but should be supported to obtain Level 6 (Undergraduate degree) in the Technical area as soon as practicable. In addition to this, a teaching qualification that equates to at least level 5 on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) (i.e. a minimum of a Cert Ed), is required. The Postgraduate Certificate in Education is at level 6 on the QCF and is desirable. In exceptional circumstances, individuals may be recruited to the BL Group without such a teaching qualification. In this case there should be an agreement as part of the job offer that a teaching qualification will be undertaken and should be completed within two full standard academic years. This should be included in recruitment advertisements. Selection process details

The selection process will be through sift, formal interview and a short presentation. Interviews will be conducted onsite at RAF Cosford.

Candidates should please use the guidance within the Civil Service Success Profiles framework (for Burnham Lecturers the Civil Service Behaviours are at Level 3 - HEO and equivalent) and the Situation-Task-Action-Result (S-T-A-R) format to articulate their experience.
When choosing your Behaviour examples, please make sure you use real life scenarios that relate to your own experiences. Whilst technology may help to enhance your written submission, presenting the ideas of others or those generated by technology, could result in your application being rejected.
The sift will be conducted on Developing self and Others, Leadership, Communicating and influencing, Managing a Quality Service, CV, technical skill and personal statement.
The interview will be assessed on Developing self and Others, Leadership, Communicating and influencing, Managing a Quality Service and 15 minute presentation.
Candidates selected for interview will be contacted about the arrangements in due course, following the sift.
