We are delighted to offer an opportunity for a consultant in paediatric gastroenterology. We are at a key point in developing what is one of the core departments of the Great North Children’s Hospital (GNCH) and are looking to enhance our team with a highly motivated, ambitious individual. GNCH has an ambition to become one of the best children’s hospitals in the world and a strong gastroenterology department is central to this. We welcome applications from individuals with grid or equivalent training in paediatric gastroenterology. You must possess MRCPCH or equivalent, and will be a registered medical practitioner on, or eligible to join, the Specialist Register for Paediatrics within six months of the date of the Appointments Committee. CCT in paediatric gastroenterology or evidence of equivalent training / experience is essential.
Responsibilities
* Clinical: Provide expert opinions on patients with a wide range of acute and longstanding paediatric gastroenterology problems, taking independent responsibility for the clinical care of referred patients. Contribute to capsule endoscopy and wireless PH studies. Lead in-hospital complex nutrition team (enteral and parenteral) and work with nursing and staff to develop care systems for children with specific disorders. Lead paediatric gastroenterology outpatient clinics and endoscopy lists (including unscheduled work within hours). Participate in Clinical Governance and maintain CME per Royal College guidelines. Undertake annual appraisal and job plan review, aligned with Trust objectives.
* Managerial: Manage dedicated paediatric gastroenterology outpatient clinics and endoscopy lists to maximise theatre efficiency. Contribute to multidisciplinary quality improvement, audit, risk management, and complaints investigations as per Trust policy. Collaborate with consultant colleagues, nursing staff, and related care providers to organise paediatric services. Facilitate timely M+M meetings for SUIs.
* Administrative: Undertake administrative duties related to patient care and Children’s Services Directorate operations. May become a member of the Medical Staff Committee. Engage in financial management of the paediatric budget while ensuring high-quality care and efficient use of resources.
* Research: Engage with GNCH’s research priorities, participate in clinical trials, and collaborate with Newcastle University on opportunities related to immune dysregulation and the gut microbiome.
* Teaching: Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision of junior medical staff. Contribute to educational leadership and mentorship as part of the clinical supervision team.
Person Specification
Essential
* Education, Qualifications and Specialist Skills: Primary Medical Qualification; Full GMC Registration; MRCPCH; Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register within 6 months from the date of the AAC; CCT in Paediatric Gastroenterology or equivalent experience/qualification
Desirable
* Higher Degree; Special skills training in the specialty
Clinical Experience
* Wide experience in Paediatric Gastroenterology; expertise in paediatric endoscopy; experience in management of gastroenterological and hepatological complications of stem cell transplantation; ability to take independent responsibility for clinical care of patients at a tertiary centre; ability to coordinate care of complex patients with other sub-specialty teams
Management and Administration Experience
* Involvement with management and project leadership within the specialty; ability to run a service and participate in management processes; understanding of Clinical Governance
Teaching
* Experience supervising junior medical staff; participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching; ability to teach clinical/technical/practical skills
Research
* Evidence of involvement in and understanding of research methodology and publication of findings
Audit
* Evidence of participation in audit; potential to influence practice through audit outcomes
