Hello, my name is Ben, I am 61 and have MS.
I am looking for a carer who will look after my personal needs during short shifts at the weekend and/or during the week. The shifts are in the afternoon and in the evening. If it works for you, there could be some shifts in the morning, which would be covering for my 2 carers who do this shift.
The shift I am most keen to find a carer for is in the evening.
A bit about me
* I'm in a wheelchair. I use a hoist to get me from the bed to the chair
* I have limited use of my arms and hands, so I need quite a lot of help with things like eating, setting up my computer and phone, and putting my glasses on
* I am very good at describing my needs and working with my carer to make things easy for both of us
* My situation is undeniably difficult but most of the time I see the good and the funny side of life
* As well as having excellent carers, I am really well supported by my friends and family of 4 siblings, cousins, nephews and nieces
* I'm interested in gardening, architecture, art, music, politics, history, literature, the latest box set and love to chat about these things. I also like a good gossip
A bit about you
* You live in Deal
* You have experiences as a carer and are comfortable giving personal care e.g. washing me and taking me to the toilet
* You can get me in and out of a hoist. If you haven't used one before, one of my carers will teach you - most of them have had to learn from scratch
* I also use a patient turner trolly
* You need to be strong enough to roll me over on the bed. I have had as many female as male carers but they have been 5ft 6in/168cm and are fit and strong
* You are reliable and punctual
* You are a good communicator
* Fairly quickly you're able to anticipate my needs and work in partnership with me
A typical day
Morning
* Prepare my breakfast and feed me
* Wash me
* Help me with my exercises
* Give me my meds
* 'Hoist me' from the bed to the toilet and then into my chair.
All of the above takes about 2 hours. Second half of the shift:
* Work alongside other care givers and service providers e.g. Linda my physiotherapist or the occupational therapist.
* Help me manage my diary, make appointments, write emails and get on the phone. I'm well organised and good at thinking ahead but I need help with a range of basic admin tasks. This takes up a fair bit of the morning session, especially during the week
* Prepare lunch and feed me
* Hoist me back into bed for a nap
Afternoon
* Hoist me from my bed to my chair
* Set up for the evening, prepare sandwiches
Evening
* Hoist me from my chair to my bed and set me up for the night
I need this level of care 7 days a week. The morning sessions are already covered by 2 carers, each working solo. But there will be occasions when I need a 3rd carer to cover those morning sessions.
I am now looking for a 3rd carer who lives locally, so doesn't mind the shorter shifts, particularly the evening ones. It would be lovely if you had some flexibility and were able to fill in the gaps which inevitably come up, sometimes at short notice.
If you are applying please let me know what sessions/days you are interested in covering. My brother Mark is managing the responses
A bit about our household
* I live in a very nice house with my 89 year old mum, Kate
* Our friend Holly lives in the basement. She does some housework and gardening for us and is our night time back up if either Kate or I need emergency help
* My brother Guy lives just round the corner and pops in most days. My brother Mark and sister Lucy each come for the day every 2 weeks or so. So do old friends.
* It's a lively and fun home with lots of people coming and going
This is not a live in position
* You are responsible for your own tax status. This is not PAYE
* You are responsible for your own insurance
* There is no holiday pay
* This is not a sponsorship position under a Health and Care Worker visa
* You are responsible for the cost of your travel
* You need references and a DBS Check
