Job Description

The Times and The Sunday Times represent a combined 400 years of covering news and providing comment and analysis on the UK and the world. We are authoritative, credible, responsible, trusted and a part of the nation’s cultural heritage.

Your role: The Deputy Head of News Production will be part of the senior team producing The Times and The Sunday Times across all digital and print platforms, on a maternity cover contract. They will ensure the quality of our news, world and comment content, organise the subbing workflow and oversee copy, publish digital stories, sign off print pages, and guarantee that all output remains true to the Times and Sunday Times aesthetics.

Day to day you will:

1. Work a nine-night fortnight across a seven-day rota, covering production editor roles on both digital and print, as well as chief sub-editing and revise shifts

2. Successfully manage productive relationships with the head of news production, the wider production team, senior editors and reporters

3. Take responsibility for print and digital production across the sections Work with the news desks and colleagues in design, pictures, graphics and multimedia to produce sections efficiently and on deadline

4. Rewrite headlines and sub, revise and rewrite copy to ensure sections are of the highest standard

5. Provide mentoring and training to sub-editors and graduate trainees, and give feedback where appropriate

6. Use SEO and metrics to help guide decision-making, editing and headline construction

7. Forward-plan for news projects

8. Assist the head of news production and the senior production team with staff and budget management

What we’re looking for from you:

9. Experience in a senior editorial position at a national newspaper or digital news organisation

10. Expertise in publishing on multi-platform products

11. Able to identify and implement efficient ways of working that reduce editorial costs and raise standards

12. Experience of recruiting, managing, training and mentoring staff

13. Imaginative in writing headlines and other page/digital furniture

14. Persuasive presentation skills, well-developed interpersonal skills, with the ability to problem-solve and negotiate positive outcomes

15. An ability to work under pressure, to tight deadlines and with rigorous accuracy

16. Able to communicate succinctly and effectively

17. Experience working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams

18. A strong understanding of editorial compliance and regulatory issues
