MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
The purpose of this newly formed role ‘S&T’ COO is to provide day-to-day, direct support to the S&T RH, and, as necessary, International and Regional Department Heads in the execution of their mandates. This support will take many forms including strategic and operational activities across a multitude of business disciplines.
In particular, this will involve the following:
* Lead, manage and drive the goals and required outcomes through the COO team. These need to support the key business outcomes expected of the team including:
* Cost Management (Direct and Indirect),
* Programme/Project inputs and outcomes,
* Effective FO controls,
* Infrastructure requirement of the business
* Strategic plans and budgets,
* Resource allocation,
* Culture and people agenda support
* Drive Cost Management – work collaboratively across business units and support functions to ensure optimal in-year cost outcomes, drive mid-term strategies, and seek long term opportunities
* Working closely with the business and entity management, ensure all change programmes impacting the business line (directly or indirectly) have clear business requirements, programme ownership, appropriate internal and external resource levels, strategic alignment and delivers planned outcomes
Ensure Front Office Controls and supervisory processes are fit for purpose, operating effectively and consistently, fully embedded and reinforcing a strong 1LoD risk culture
* Working closely with senior S+T management, deliver robust business plans which reflect the expected return metrics, allocate resources reflecting near term and long term strategic goals and enable performance management assessment in a transparent and consistent manner
* Working closely with HR partner, embed within the FO best practices in regards to an agreed people strategy, encompassing DEI, performance management, clarity of objectives, successions etc.
This role is a critical part of the S&T day to day management. The range of inputs is complex and requires a broad set of capabilities/experiences including:
* Programme management,
* Regulatory knowledge/interaction,
* Financial modelling,
* Front to back controls,
* Audit management,
* Willingness to challenge and be challenged,
* Knowledge of MUFG, International platform, Tokyo S&T and HD planning teams.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership & Strategic Development
* Assist the Regional Head of S&T, and from time to time Department Heads, in setting the strategic direction and objectives in line with divisional and wider MUFG goals.
* Review of potential growth areas with the Regional Head of S&T and ensuring strong execution to capture opportunities
* Lead strategic projects for the S&T team - initiatives such as establishing a new subsidiary or new Business, or investigating the requirements for trading on new venues and in new jurisdictions.
* Work as an integral member of the S&T Management Team to ensure it operates efficiently and optimally, and taking responsibility for driving through the requisite change to achieve this.
* Oversight responsibility for the planning, management and achievement of all aspects of the non financial targets for S&T, including BSC and HR management. Work closely with senior Traders and Salespeople to realise their key objectives and ensure operational effectiveness and execution.
* Drive Global S&T initiatives, EMEA regional strategies and their execution in S&T, coordinating and negotiating with other divisions, regions and entities in MUFG.
* Identify operational bottlenecks and build scalable solutions that drive growth and improve overall business performance.
Customer, Stakeholder & Product Development
* Manage critical external relationships to ensure that the stakeholders see MUFG as a trusted, professional partner.
* Support the Trading team on the strategy and prioritisation of new product/business approval – responsible for socialising concepts with essential functions Technology, Operations, Risk and Compliance where required
* Serve as liaison between S&T and various support groups (i.e. Operations, Risk, Technology, Compliance) to guarantee that the business, operational, and regulatory goals are aligned and achieved efficiently and effectively, to oversee the day to day running of the business and to drive the implementation of critical initiatives and lead remediation of a wide range of ad hoc tasks and issues.
* Oversight responsibility for putting in place and maintain proper intra-MUFG business framework agreements between MUS entities and MUFG group entities (such as CAS, SLAs) and divisional product approvals (NPAs), being consistent to internal and external rules and their changes, collaborating with planning, risk and compliance divisions.
Governance, Risk & Compliance
* Foster a strong risk culture and build a highly inclusive team to ensure members thrive and organizational outcomes are met
* Develop the S&T framework of governance, risk and control to facilitate appropriate engagement and accountability with stakeholders in both FO and Support Functions. Be responsible for the S&T risk and compliance programme including meeting with internal and external auditors and relevant regulators when required, and complying with internal control systems and requirements. Ensure that all significant incidents and control issues are properly reported and managed in a timely manner.
* Effectively optimise, manage and mitigate risk within S&T, working with the management, business and internal risk and compliance functions to set appropriate processes and procedures as appropriate for an international broker-dealer based in EMEA.
* Represent S&T in relevant meetings / committees / conferences to facilitate policy development and contribute to business performance.
Financial Oversight & Market Intelligence
* Oversight responsibility for the planning, management and achievement of all aspects of the financial targets for S&T, including budgeting, target allocation, monitoring and reporting the results in a timely manner.
* Provide analytics and data-driven analysis on costs, trading performance and client segments.
Operational Management
* Drive the development of new processes and procedures to deliver improvements and innovations in the way business support services deliver advice across the business.
* Work with the Heads within S&T to develop the optimal marketing, operating and booking models and associated organisational structures, setting and reviewing personal objectives and providing support and guidance to the team as necessary to deliver the required results.
Global Collaboration
* Develop strong internal networks and build trusted relationships to enable change and influence behaviour across MUFG both in EMEA and globally.
Employer of Choice

WORK EXPERIENCE
* Senior leadership role in an international trading business, such as a top tier trading / securities firm, broker-dealer or swap-dealer, providing a strong understanding of the industries, businesses and competitive environments in which the firm operates
* Expertise in S&T products, in particular Derivatives
* Previous background as a Trader desirable
* Strong project management experience, coordinating and representing all aspects of the business with particular emphasis on Sales & Trading.
* Background supporting a Trading business through continued growth and change
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
* Expert communicator, presenter, and collaborator; able to forge productive relationships with strategic partners and build consensus across multiple organisational levels
* Experience in Business representation at senior management forums, and demonstrated ability to have substantial influence at senior management levels
* Experience delivering high profile projects in a trading environment through to successful completion
* Good financial and business planning capability, including strong inter-divisional negotiation/coordination skills
* Strong personal presence, to lead by example to maintain influence across internal teams.
* A high degree of motivation, adaptability and proactive thinking
* An appetite for information and an ability to prioritise and present valuable conclusions and summaries
* Coaching, mentoring and leadership skills
