Job overview

The NIHR Newcastle Clinical Research Facility brings together the clinical and scientific expertise of the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (Newcastle Hospitals) and Newcastle University.

We are one of 28 Clinical Research Facilities across England awarded the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Facility designation to support delivery of early phase clinical trials, experimental medicine studies and other complex studies that could not be delivered in the routine settings of the NHS.

The NIHR Newcastle CRF offers expertise in a broad range of disease areas at our four research units:

* Early Phase Research Unit (EPRU) supports a broad range of disease areas in both children and adults, but with a special focus on phase 1 studies, advanced therapies and infectious disease.
* Clinical Ageing Research Unit (CARU), co-located with Centre of In Vivo Imaging (CIVI), is designed to support research into Ageing syndromes, movement disorders, multiple long-term conditions and studies involving advanced imaging techniques.
* Dental Research Unit (DRU) with a focus on studies in dentistry and oral medicine.
* Paediatric Research Unit (PRU) supports a broad range of research in Child Health including paediatric oncology.

Main duties of the job

Our aim is to support effective delivery of high-quality, cutting-edge early phase and experimental medical research by providing a state‑of‑the‑art facility and specialist workforce and knowledge. We work closely with our patient and public partners as well as academic and commercial organisations within a national framework of UKCRFs and other NIHR infrastructure, putting our patients at the forefront of everything we do.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join the Newcastle Clinical Research Facility in the position of Research Support Manager. With an awareness of Trust policies – including HR and Clinical Research – to lead the Clinical Trial Coordination, Data Management and administrative functions within the team. The ability to manage your own workload with an exceptionally high level of communication skills are essential requirements for this role.

The Research Support Manager will be responsible for facilitating the management of research feasibility, the efficient and timely initiation and delivery of clinical research, as well as the implementation, standardisation, and optimisation of quality, financial, and data systems to support activity and performance reporting.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Research Support Manager will demonstrate strong leadership skills with extensive knowledge of clinical research in particular the governance and delivery of commercial and non‑commercial studies. The post holder will be able to analyse and interpret complex information from a variety of sources to judge the most appropriate course of action and propose improvements, often involving competing priorities e.g. management of the capacity and demand of the research clinical trials including target related priorities.

The post holder will be able to produce work of a consistently high standard to frequently tight deadlines and must be able to prioritise and organise their workload accordingly, using a high level of organisational skills with the ability to relay complex information to a variety of stakeholders. The post holder will gain an awareness of all current and upcoming studies on the portfolio in which they will be an escalation point for issues regarding studies and capacity. They will lead team meetings and support the training and induction of new staff members. The Research Support Manager must have an in‑depth knowledge of local and national research governance frameworks, systems and local trust policies. The post holder will demonstrate excellent communication and negotiation skills with effective regular communication with a variety of internal and external stakeholders to ensure efficient flow of information. There will be direct line management responsibilities for research support staff.

Job Purpose

The post holder will support the management and maintenance of the clinical trial coordination, data management and administrative functions within designated research team(s) delivering information, tools and processes that support the effective management of the portfolio of research within the team(s).

The primary aims of the post are to:

* Facilitate the management of research feasibility assessments.
* Ensure the efficient and timely initiation and delivery of clinical research.
* Ensure the implementation, standardisation, and optimisation of quality, financial, and data systems.
* Support activity and performance reporting.

The post holder will work with the Clinical Research Team Lead and other senior managers to support the identification and delivery of quality improvement and other projects across the team as required.


Person specification


Qualifications & Education

* Educated to degree level or equivalent experience in scientific and medical research
* Post graduate certificate in clinical research or other relevant post graduate qualification/ experience


Knowledge & Experience

* Significant experience in clinical trial administration and co‑ordination in the NHS, academic and/ or commercial setting. In‑depth understanding of clinical research process, patient information systems and relevant clinical research relevant standards and legislation
* Knowledge of the governance and legislative framework for conducting clinical research studies, e.g. Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Knowledge and understanding of policies and procedures pertaining to confidentially and data protection, e.g. Data Protection Act, GDPR and Caldicott Guidelines
* Knowledge of external organisations including research partners in the higher education and commercial sectors
* Knowledge of HR policies and procedures
* Experience of managing staff
* Experience of budgetary management
* Specialty specific knowledge and experience
* Experience of delivering service improvements
* Experience of working with research funders, including industry and NHS
* Experience of working collaboratively with academic, professional, and managerial staff at a senior level within healthcare, academic or research setting
* Knowledge of the wider NHS and health service issues
* Experience of using an electronic patient record
