Job overview

Due to a review of the staffing establishment an exciting opportunity has arisen for additional Band 4 Nursery Nurses to join the team at the East London Mother & Baby Unit.

Applicants for this position will need to be a nursery nurse with the appropriate training, experience of working with babies and who are able to demonstrate interest in Perinatal Mental Health.

Working in a Mother & Baby Unit is a unique role for nursery nurses to work within an inpatient mental health ward, supporting babies and their mothers who are experiencing mental health difficulties.

The East London Mother and Baby unit is a 12 bedded unit based within the City & Hackney Centre for Mental Health.

This family-centred specialist Mother and Baby Unit cares for people who experience severe mental health difficulties during the later stages of pregnancy and following the birth. The mothers are either experiencing mental health problems ante-natally or up to one year post-natally and require direct support in ensuring care of the infant is upheld whilst supporting the mother through their own recovery.

The ward team consists of registered mental health nurses, nursery nurses, social therapists and a life skills recovery worker. This work is further enhanced in therapy by a psychologist, occupational therapist, parent-infant psychotherapist, art therapist and dance movement therapist.

Main duties of the job

Applicants will be expected to demonstrate a sound knowledge of caring effectively for infants under 1 year and to use this knowledge to teach and guide colleagues and mums.

Assess and implementcare for infants and ensuring needs are met and that mum is supported to provide safe and effective care to baby.

To contribute to the development of standards of care for both mothers and babies on the unit, proving feedback as necessary and taking positive steps towards implementing necessary change

To support wider family network as necessary around knowledge and care of babies.

Any successful applicant will also be expected to support the City and Hackney Centre for Mental Health in providing care and treatment and upholding the safety of both patients and staff within the unit.

You will be expected to work Long days, nights and weekends. You will also be expected to undertake training in physical holding skills.

Education/ Qualification/ Training

Essential criteria

1. •(NNEB) or Diploma in childcare & education or National diploma in early years
2. •Level 3 children and education

Experience

Essential criteria

3. •Ability to perform and participate as part of a Multidisciplinary team.
4. •Ability to communicate effectively verbally, in writing and electronically.
5. •Ability to work towards a competency framework.
6. •Experience of working actively with young babies within the last few months and having contributed directly to the development of services available to them.
7. •Relevant post qualification experience.
8. •Experience of observing changes in the physical and psychological condition of babies and contributing to the development of skills in other staff and being able to monitor this.
9. •Experience of working in a mental health setting

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria

10. •Detailed knowledge of child development and knowledge of age and stage of appropriate play activities.
11. •Understanding of the Children’s Act and knowledge of child
12. •Awareness of the National Service Framework (NSF) for Children and other Government initiatives.
13. •Knowledge of primary health care relating to young infants.
14. •Ability to manage difficult situations or Provide advice to others to ensure they act appropriately.
