We are recruiting on behalf of a well-established environmental consultancy in Leeds for an Associate Ecologist with strong experience in biodiversity net gain (BNG), ecological assessment, and planning. This is an excellent opportunity to step into an Associate-level role, leading ecological input on projects, mentoring junior staff, and helping grow ecology services across the North of England.
🌱 The Role
As an Associate Ecologist, you will play a key part in delivering ecological services across a varied portfolio of development and infrastructure projects. Responsibilities include:

Leading ecological assessments and biodiversity net gain (BNG) strategies from concept to completion
*
Producing high-quality ecological reports (EcIA, BNG reports, habitat management plans) for planning submissions
*
Providing technical ecological input to planning teams, developers, local authorities, and statutory consultees
*
Overseeing field surveys, data analysis, and habitat evaluations in compliance with UK policy and best practice
*
Mentoring and reviewing work from junior ecologists and assistants
*
Supporting business growth through client engagement and proposal development
🌿 About You
Our ideal candidate will be a proactive ecologist who enjoys both technical delivery and client-facing responsibility. You will likely have:

4+ years’ experience in ecological consultancy, including BNG
*
Strong knowledge of UK habitat and species legislation, planning policy, and guidance (including BNG frameworks)
*
Experience leading ecological assessments and writing technical reports
*
Confidence liaising with clients, planners, and statutory consultees
*
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
*
Ability to manage multiple projects and supervise junior staff

Use of BNG calculators and GIS tools (QGIS/ArcGIS)
*
Protected species survey and licensing experience
*
Chartered membership or working towards CIEEM accreditation
*
Experience working on multi-disciplinary project teams
