We are pleased to advertise a full time Band 5 Permanent Orthoptic post at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ hospital trust. You will join a team of enthusiastic and motivated Orthoptists, Optometrists, Ophthalmologists and Ophthalmic technicians. The post involves a wide range of adult and paediatric complex clinics. The department serves a busy London Teaching hospital, tertiary referral centre and the Evelina Children’s Hospital.
This role is suitable for a newly qualified Orthoptist who is enthusiastic, hardworking and a team player. The post holder will gain experience in fast-paced, busy paediatric clinics involving complex strabismus and neurology, assess adult patients in the ocular motility clinic, and participate in specialist neuro clinics and A&E. A mentor will be provided and the post holder will be well supported throughout the role. This is an excellent opportunity to develop core orthoptic clinical practice.
The department supports undergraduate placements for 8.5 months of the year and collaborates with an active ophthalmology service including a Professor of Ophthalmology specialising in Ocular Motility, four Paediatric Consultants and a busy A&E department.
Responsibilities
 * Provide appropriate and accurate Orthoptic assessment for all referred patients (inpatients and outpatients), including patients with special needs.
 * Assess patients preoperatively and postoperatively.
 * Liaise with other professionals (ECLO, ophthalmic technicians, consultants) and work within a multidisciplinary team.
 * Assist with clinical administration.
 * Assess patients for adjustable sutures post-operatively.
 * Liaise with the Head or Department Orthoptist regarding service delivery issues.
 * Perform appropriate perimetry (automated and manual fields).
 * Interpret results from the Humphrey Visual Field Analyser and Goldmann Perimeter.
 * Attend departmental meetings for Ophthalmology and Orthoptics, as well as relevant training events.
 * Attend and contribute to the department's journal club.
 * Comply with departmental quality procedures and participate in quality management monitoring (including audits of hospital ophthalmology services).
 * Observe and maintain professional standards at all times.
 * Be involved in departmental teaching and clinical placements of work experience students, Orthoptic/Optometry/Medical students, GPs, Health Visitors, CMOs and Ophthalmologists.
 * Attend an appraisal or Personal Development Review (PDR) at least annually.
 * Provide internal cover for colleagues during periods of annual leave, sickness and vacancies across sites.
Qualifications
Applicants must have a degree/diploma in Orthoptics and be registered with HCPC. The job is subject to criminal records check, references and a health check.
