Are you looking to launch your career and gain hands‑on experience across a diverse range of adult inpatient care settings? Barts Health NHS Trust has an exciting opportunity for a permanent Band 5 Speech and Language Therapist to join our friendly and supportive team. The rotation consists of inpatient stroke and inpatient acute (including intensive care unit, if required). This post holder will develop knowledge and skills in the assessment, management and rehabilitation of patients with communication and/or swallowing difficulties as a result of stroke and/or other medical conditions.


Responsibilities

* Independently manage and prioritise your caseload, delivering high‑quality, evidence‑based assessment and intervention in line with professional competencies.
* Work closely within a multidisciplinary team and contribute to holistic, patient‑centred care.
* Provide education and support to patients, families and colleagues.
* Demonstrate accountability, maintain accurate clinical records in line with professional standards, and actively engage in supervision and continuous professional development.
* Contribute to service improvement, training and the wider development of the team.
* Engage in joint clinical sessions, in‑house training and peer supervision; support Speech and Language Therapy assistants and students.


Qualifications

* Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree Qualification or equivalent (essential).
* Registered with Health & Care Professions Council – Licence to Practice (essential).
* Experience of working with adults with acquired communication and swallowing disorders within the acute inpatients setting (essential).
* Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team, including collaboration with different professional groups and contribution to coordinated patient care (essential).
* Post‑registration experience working with adult patients presenting with acquired communication and swallowing disorders within an acute inpatient setting (desirable).
* Experience working with patients from diverse, multicultural and multilingual backgrounds (desirable).
* Knowledge of relevant assessment tools and therapeutic interventions used in the management of adults with acquired communication and swallowing disorders (desirable).
* Awareness of the principles of clinical governance and audit (desirable).
* Knowledge of national policies, procedures and current research relevant to stroke, frailty, respiratory and neurological conditions (desirable).
* Experience of contributing to quality improvement and service development projects (desirable).

* Excellent interpersonal skills utilising observation, active listening and empathy to build and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders.
* Ability to adapt communication effectively to suit different audiences, including patients, family members and consultants, ensuring information is conveyed clearly, appropriately and sensitively.
* Demonstrable negotiation and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to analyse situations, consider multiple perspectives and reach effective, practical solutions in collaboration with colleagues and service users.
* Strong analytical and reflective skills in clinical practice and personal development, with the ability to critically evaluate information, identify learning points and apply insights to improve decision‑making.
* Good organisational skills with the ability to effectively plan, prioritise and manage a varied workload, ensuring deadlines are met and high standards of service delivery are maintained.
* Ability to work independently, take initiative and proactively seek appropriate support and guidance when required to ensure safe and effective practice.
* Basic computer literacy skills, including the ability to use standard IT systems and software effectively for documentation, communication and administrative tasks.
