NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, employing approximately 40,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non‑clinical professions and roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health services to a population of over 1.15 million people, and to a wider population of 2.2 million when regional and national services are included.


The role

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced and enthusiastic Clinical Scientist (Radiotherapy) to join our friendly team of 73 Clinical Scientists and Clinical Technologists. The successful candidate will be involved in all operations of the department including treatment planning, imaging, dosimetry and QA, brachytherapy and will also have dedicated time to pursue department's R&D and quality improvement initiatives.

The department has a total of 13 operational linacs currently comprising 12 Varian TrueBeam linacs, 2 of which have HD MLC, and one Varian Ethos System. Fully adaptive treatments on Ethos commenced in January 2026. Eleven linacs are being replaced within the next 6 years, one planned every six months. Treatment planning is performed using Varian Eclipse TPS and doses are independently checked using RadCalc. Approximately 700 treatment plans are produced every month with the vast majority being inverse planned. Various techniques are established in the department including VMAT, IMRT, SABR, TBI, TSE, DIBH, gating, HyperArc and RapidPlan, among others.

The main service is located at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre with a satellite centre at Monklands Hospital. The West End is a fantastic place to live with a high quality of life and close proximity to local attractions.


Duration, Location, and Working Pattern

* One site at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre and a satellite centre at Monklands Hospital
* Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 18:00


Key responsibilities

* Provide a specialist clinical radiotherapy physics service supporting the safe and effective treatment of cancer patients
* Undertake complex treatment planning, radiation dosimetry and optimisation for external beam and brachytherapy treatments
* Contribute to the commissioning, acceptance testing and quality assurance of radiotherapy equipment and systems
* Act as an Operator under IRMER and ensure compliance with radiation safety legislation and local procedures
* Support clinical developments, service improvements and the introduction of new techniques and technologies
* Provide scientific advice to multidisciplinary colleagues including oncologists, radiographers and nursing staff
* Participate in training, mentorship, research and quality improvement activities within the service


Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job

* First or upper second class honours degree in Physics or an allied subject
* Recognised MSc in Medical Physics or equivalent postgraduate qualification
* HCPC registration as Clinical Scientist is a requirement. Candidates on a UK accredited training programme (SMCPETS or STP) are also encouraged to apply. If successful, initial appointment will be as a Band 6 Trainee Clinical Scientist, with automatic progression to Band 7 once training has been completed and HCPC registration gained
* Specialist knowledge of radiotherapy physics equipment, treatment planning systems and radiation dosimetry
* Experience working within a clinical scientific service ideally in radiotherapy physics
* Ability to work autonomously, manage competing priorities and make complex decisions affecting patient care
* Strong communication skills with a commitment to multidisciplinary working and continuous professional development
