The Institute, an internationally renowned research centre for prion and other neurodegenerative conditions, is seeking an experienced Institute Manager to lead and oversee its professional services and operational functions.

Role Overview

The Institute Manager is the senior professional services lead, reporting directly to the Institute Director, and is responsible for ensuring the effective running of all operational, technical, and administrative support across the Institute. The role requires a highly strategic and hands-on leader with strong experience in higher education operations, financial stewardship, and staff management.

Key Responsibilities

* Lead and manage professional services (finance, HR, IT, labs, health & safety, facilities, estates, governance).
* Oversee a complex multi-stream budget (MRC + UCL core + external funding), ensuring effective financial planning, reporting, and compliance.
* Support the Director in implementing scientific and operational strategies aligned to UCL and MRC priorities.
* Drive strategic planning, including UCL’s annual cycle, MRC quinquennial reviews, and business continuity.
* Lead change management, organisational development, and operational efficiency improvements.
* Develop and manage relationships with senior stakeholders across UCL, MRC, NHS, funders, and industry partners.
* Ensure compliance with statutory, UCL, and MRC policies (including health & safety, HTA, governance, research ethics).
* Line manage up to 6 senior direct reports (c. 30 indirect), ensuring effective leadership, staff development, and a positive workplace culture.

Candidate Profile

* Proven track record in senior operations/administration within a higher education or research-intensive environment.
* Strong background in budgetary control and financial management for large-scale, complex units.
* In-depth knowledge of research funding governance, HR policy, and compliance frameworks.
* Demonstrated experience in leading teams, driving organisational change, and strategic planning.
* Skilled at working with senior academic, clinical, and external stakeholders with diplomacy and authority.
* Educated to degree level (PhD in a scientific discipline desirable).
* Experience with project/change management and NHS/clinical academic partnerships is advantageous.
