Job Title: Chief Risk Officer (CRO)
Location: London (Hybrid Working)
Business Type: Specialty Insurer – Lloyd’s Syndicate in Application Phase
Type: Full-Time, Permanent
Package: Competitive Base Salary + Bonus + Equity Options
About Us
We are a forward-thinking specialty insurance business in the exciting process of forming a new Lloyd’s syndicate. Backed by long-term capital and led by an experienced management team, our ambition is to bring differentiated underwriting, disciplined risk management, and sustainable growth to the Lloyd’s marketplace.
As we progress through the formal Lloyd’s syndicate application process, we’re seeking a Chief Risk Officer (CRO) to join our leadership team and take end-to-end responsibility for designing and implementing our risk framework ensuring our business meets the highest standards of governance, control, and regulatory compliance from day one.
The Role
Reporting directly to the CEO and sitting on the executive committee, the Chief Risk Officer will be instrumental in establishing a fit-for-purpose Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) framework during our syndicate formation and beyond.
This is a rare opportunity to join a business at a formative stage and shape the risk strategy, culture, and controls from the ground up.
Key Responsibilities
Syndicate Application Process
* Lead all aspects of the risk and governance workstreams as part of our Lloyd’s syndicate application.
* Develop and articulate our Risk Management Framework (RMF) in line with Lloyd’s Minimum Standards and regulatory expectations.
* Own and deliver the risk components of the application, including risk appetite statements, qualitative and quantitative submissions, and governance documentation.
* Act as the primary risk representative during engagements with Lloyd’s (e.g. Business Opportunities Committee) and UK regulators (PRA/FCA).
Enterprise Risk Management
* Design and embed a proportionate, effective ERM framework across the business.
* Establish and maintain the risk appetite framework, key risk indicators, and risk registers.
* Oversee scenario analysis, stress testing, and interface with the capital modelling and actuarial teams.
* Ensure the risk control environment supports our underwriting strategy and operational model.
Governance & Oversight
* Lead or support Board-level risk governance (e.g. Risk & Capital Committee).
* Develop risk policies and reporting in compliance with Solvency II, Lloyd’s standards, and PRA/FCA expectations.
* Work closely with Compliance, Actuarial, Underwriting, and Finance teams to ensure a joined-up approach to risk.
Strategic & Cultural Leadership
* Champion a strong risk culture throughout the organisation.
* Provide independent oversight and challenge across underwriting, operations, and strategy.
* Hire, develop, and lead the risk function as the business grows post-syndicate approval.
What We're Looking For
Experience:
* 10+ years in risk / actuarial roles within insurance or reinsurance.
* Strong experience within the Lloyd’s or London Market, ideally including work on syndicate launches or regulatory approvals.
* Solid understanding of Lloyd’s governance, Solvency II, risk-based capital frameworks, and UK regulatory expectations.
* Exposure to capital modelling, ORSA, and internal model validation would be beneficial.
Skills & Attributes:
* Strategic thinker with a hands-on, delivery-oriented mindset.
* Confident engaging with regulators, Boards, and Lloyd’s oversight committees.
* Capable of operating effectively in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
* Clear communicator, able to translate complex risks into actionable insight.
Why Join Us?
* Shape the risk agenda of a new Lloyd’s syndicate from day one.
* Work with a respected leadership team and credible long-term backers.
* Enjoy the opportunity to build, influence, and grow within a culture that values integrity, innovation, and discipline.
* Competitive compensation and equity package, with real long-term upside.
