About the Role:We are recruiting on behalf of North Yorkshire Council for an experienced Benefits Officer to join their Welfare & Benefits Service on a short-term contract. You will be responsible for administering Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction claims, ensuring accuracy, compliance with legislation, and excellent customer service to residents across the county.
Key Responsibilities:
* Process and assess new claims and changes of circumstance for Housing Benefit & Council Tax Reduction.
* Provide advice and support to residents, landlords, internal departments, and external agencies.
* Identify and recover overpayments, referring suspected fraud cases where appropriate.
* Work collaboratively with Council Tax, Housing, and the DWP to resolve benefit-related issues.
* Contribute to service performance targets, maintaining accurate and confidential records.
Skills & Experience:
* Recent experience assessing Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction claims.
* Strong knowledge of benefits legislation and assessment procedures.
* Excellent communication and customer service skills.
* High attention to detail and ability to work under pressure.
* Experience using benefit processing systems (Northgate desirable).
