The Electrical Engineer is responsible for the safe operation, maintenance, and improvement of electrical infrastructure within large-scale distribution centres. This includes High Voltage (HV) and Low Voltage (LV) systems, ensuring compliance with statutory regulations, business continuity, and safe systems of work. The role requires Authorised Person (AP) or Senior Authorised Person (SAP) status under relevant safety rules. Key Responsibilities Electrical Systems & Infrastructure Operate, maintain, and fault-find HV (typically 11kV) and LV electrical distribution systems Manage substations, transformers, switchgear, UPS systems, generators, and power distribution networks Ensure electrical resilience and uptime for automated material handling systems, conveyors, robotics, and IT infrastructure Review and implement electrical upgrades and capacity improvements to support operational growth HV/LV Authorised Duties (AP/SAP) Act as Authorised Person (AP) or Senior Authorised Person (SAP) under company or client safety rules Issue, receive, and control: Permits to Work (PTW) Sanctions for Test Isolation and switching programmes Carry out HV/LV switching operations in line with approved procedures Maintain and review safety documentation, switching schedules, and single-line diagrams Compliance & Safety Ensure compliance with: Electricity at Work Regulations BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations) HSG85 and relevant HV safety rules Lead electrical safety audits, inspections, and risk assessments Investigate incidents and implement corrective actions Act as technical authority for electrical safety on site Maintenance & Project Support Manage planned and reactive maintenance activities Coordinate and supervise contractors working on HV/LV systems Support capital projects including new builds, refurbishments, and plant installations Review technical designs, method statements, and RAMS Operational Support Provide technical support to operations and facilities teams Participate in on-call rota for electrical faults and emergencies Minimise downtime in a 24/7 operational environment Skills & Experience Required Technical Experience Proven experience working in large distribution centres, warehouses, logistics hubs, or industrial facilities Strong hands-on experience with HV and LV systems Experience with critical environments requiring high availability Knowledge of backup power systems (generators, UPS, ATS) Authorisation & Qualifications Authorised Person (AP) or Senior Authorised Person (SAP) for HV/LV systems Electrical Engineering qualification (e.g.: HNC / HND / Degree in Electrical Engineering City & Guilds or equivalent) IOSH or NEBOSH (desirable) Personal & Professional Skills Strong understanding of electrical safety and compliance Ability to lead switching operations and supervise contractors Excellent problem-solving and fault-diagnosis skills Confident communicator with stakeholders at all levels Comfortable working in fast-paced, operational environments Typical Environments National or regional distribution centres Automated warehouses Fulfilment centres Logistics and supply-chain hubs Working Conditions Site-based role May involve shift work or on-call duties Exposure to HV environments and operational warehouse settings
